TheDungeons & Dragonsfranchise has one of itsbest book series inThe Legend of Drizzt, but it could have spent more time on the saga’s key romance. The Legend of Drizztis R.A. Salvatore’s creative tour of the Forgotten Realms, as seen through the eyes of one Drizzt Do’Urden. Although invented by Gary Gygax, the drow were brought to life by Salvatore’s 36-year-old series, which shows no signs of stopping. Launched in 1988 withThe Crystal Shard, Salvatore’s books focus on Drizzt and his companions. However, they could have focused more on one companion in particular.

Powerful drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urdentraveled the Underdark, Icewind Dale, Gauntlgrym, and beyond inThe Legend of Drizzt, but wouldn’t have got far without help. From his complex relationship with his father to his first tentative alliance with Belwar Dissengulp,Drizzt proved the value of friendship, love, loyalty, and trust in over 40 books since 1988. This is key to anyD&Dstory, which has to be about getting together with friends and saving the world, above anything else. So, it’s strange that Drizzt’s relationship with one very special friend hasn’t been explored more.

The Legend Of Drizzt Books Should Have Put A Greater Focus On Drizzt & Catti-Brie’s Romance

Drizzt & Catti-Brie Deserve More Time Together In Dungeons & Dragons

The Legend of Drizztshould have spent more time onDrizzt’s romance with Catti-brie. Drizzt met his future wife, Catti-brie, in Icewind Dale inThe Icewind Dale Trilogy,The Legend of Drizzt’s first subseries, so there was lots of time for R.A. Salvatore to pick apart the many nuances of this challenging relationship. Catti-brie is one of the Companions of the Hall - she gets a lot of stories in the series, and Drizzt relies on her a lot. ButCatti-brie can feel a little underwrittencompared to other characters like Artemis, and Drizzt sometimes seems to have more chemistry with him.

Expanding Legend Of Drizzt’s Relationship Would Have Fixed A Big Catti-Brie Problem

The Books Should Have Ironed Out The Couple’s Age Difference

Artemis' chemistry with Drizzt throughout their intense rivalryis not a flaw in the series, it is a highlight, butCatti-brie could do with stepping up. Catti-brie motivates Drizzt, so making her three-dimensional is key to the credibility of the series' main character. But she should be important in her own right, like Jarlaxle and Artemis have come to be. Adding more intimate, shocking concerns and desires on her part could only serve to make her more realistic and make Drizzt more tantalizing as a character after he slipped out of the main narrative somewhat.

This Legend Of Drizzt Character Could Give D&D The Queer TV Icon It Needs

The Legend of Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore have TV’s next queer icon waiting to be adapted, and a streaming giant should exploit that.

Most importantly, there are many complexities to human-drow relationships, andThe Legend of Drizzthasn’t properly unpacked them yet.Drizzt met Catti-brie when she was 11and he was evidently much older, althoughD&Dhas provided conflicting accounts of the human value of drow years.October 2024’sBetwixt Two Worldsproves how good a story can be when Drizzt and Catti-brie are allowed to shine, and it touches briefly on their age difference. However, future releases - which seem inevitable - should clarify further how Drizzt and Catti-brie’s relationship inDungeons & Dragonsis equal and not toxic. Such an approach would benefit both characters.
