The Town Is Still Using Thomas' Memory To Manipulate Jim & The Matthews Family

“Thomas” To Ruin A Positive Moment

During the search for Fatima, Jim takes Ethan inside the crashed RV they drove into Town back in the first episode. Jim has a heartfelt moment with Ethan, where he helps his son see that what happened to Julie when she went into the ruins was not his fault. “Thomas” attempts to hijack this father-son moment as his voice crackles through the radio and speaks to Jim, but with Ethan’s encouragement, he is able to walk away without engaging with the voice.

“They’re Not Your Children Anymore”: What Thomas’ Line Means To Jim In From Season 3, Episode 4

The Matthews family gets another phone call from “Thomas” in From season 3, episode 4, which includes a haunting message about Julie and Ethan.

Just as the Town tried to break Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) by the monsters brutally murdering Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeh Moy),the Town is trying to break the Matthews family by manipulating their guilt and trauma associated with Thomas' death. Jim’s previous hopelessness, and using Thomas to criticize Tabitha duringFromseason 3, episode 6made it seem like this strategy was working. However, Jim and Ethan now being able to walk away and not engage proves that this strategy may no longer be an effective way to break them.

“Thomas” Calling On The Radio Means Jim & Ethan May Never Escape Him In From

The Town Is Determined To Use Thomas Against The Matthews Family

Despite “Thomas” no longer being as effective at rattling Jim and Ethan, the entity behind his voice does not seem like it will stop trying to break them. Even when Jim and Ethan leave the RV, “Thomas” laughs and says,“Dad!“It may be a while before the voice of “Thomas” resurfaces, but it will likely happen again, and at a time when Jim, Ethan, Tabitha, or Julie are vulnerable. Somehow, it seems like the Town is determined for the Matthews family to never escape the trauma of Thomas' death.

Since Thomas did not die in the Town, it may not be possible for him to visually manifest, meaning he can only haunt the Matthews family via voice inFrom.

Instead of his voice,“Thomas” could haunt the Matthews family in a seemingly physical form. This could be similar to Boyd’s deceased wife, Abby (Lisa Ryder) appearing before him orBoyd seeing Father Khatri(Shaun Majumder) after he died. However, Abby and Father Khatri died in the Town, and since Thomas did not die in the Town, it may not be possible for him to visually manifest, meaning he can only haunt the Matthews family via voice inFrom.
