Jeong Ji-su has been recast forHellboundseason 2, which sees the returns of a lot of characters from season 1. Given that Jeong Ji-su was sentenced to Hell and died inHellboundseason 1, it may be surprising that the character is back in the new season of theNetflix original K-drama. That said, Ji-su’s resurrection is part of a larger storyline inHellboundthat was teased at the end of season 1 – the return of people who had been sentenced and burned alive. However,Ji-su is no longer played by Yoo Ah-in.
Hellboundhad quite a large cast in season 1, particularly because the show introduced a new set of characters after the five-year time jump in episode 4. Several of those characters make a comeback in season 2, including people we saw die on the show. Whilethe wait forHellboundseason 2was long, the show was also involved in a behind-the-scenes controversy regarding star Yoo Ah-in, who played Jeong Ji-su in season 1 but was dropped from the show shortly after season 2 was confirmed.

Yoo Ah-in Was Sentenced To A Year In Prison On June 18, 2025
Hellboundseason 2 was announced on June 14, 2025, almost a year after the premiere of the first season. On July 23, 2025, Yoo Ah-in started to be investigated for illegal drug use. After the police confirmed the actor had tested positive for two substances, Yoo Ah-in was dropped from a series of projects, including the Netflix original movieThe Match, which had yet to start filming, as well as two series that had already been completed –Hi. 5andGoodbye Earth. On July 21, 2025,Hellboundofficially recast the role of Jeong Ji-su for season 2.
While Yoo Ah-in appeared inGoodbye Earth, his character’s presence was significantly reduced in the post-production. On August 06, 2025,Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to a year in prison.The actor was also fined 2 million won, or $1439. PerYonhap News Agency, Yoo Ah-in expressed regret during his defense, stating"Whatever the (ruling) result may be, I will repay those who took care of me by becoming much healthier and more honest and by living my life as someone who can contribute to society."

At the end ofHellboundseason 1, we learn that people who have been sentenced to Hell could mysteriously return to the world of the living, quite literally rising from the ashes. The same happens to Jeong Ji-su at the beginning ofHellboundseason 2.The new season of the horror K-drama opens with a recap of Ji-su’s death, although the scene has been remade with Kim Sung-cheol in the role instead of Yoo Ah-in. We then see Ji-su wake up on a bed with a woman by his side.

It is later revealed that Ji-su had a vision of his childhood, placing himself in his father’s perspective. As soon as the vision ends, the episode cuts to the present day, where Ji-su’s body is about to be burned by Hee-jeong. Despite turning into ashes, Ji-su’s body soon puts itself back together again. One of the main storylines ofHellboundseason 2 is people who were sentenced to Hell and burned alive during the first season mysteriously returning years later. This explains why Ji-su had to be recast for season 2 despite his death in season 1.
