Speaking at GenCon,Jeremy Crawford revealed that the Warrior of the Elements subclass would be going through the most changesin the2024 Player’s Handbook. Crawford said, “So of the 13 subclasses that have been completely redesigned, the one that is most dramatically redesigned is the Warrior of the Elements, which was formerly known as The Way of the Four Elements in the Monk.”

Crawford went on to explain, “There is almost no trace of the previous subclass there other than the theme. So the theme is still there of tapping into elemental power, but the gameplay is completely different.”

Big Reveals From D&D At GenCon 2024
New Changes To Monk Subclass In The Player’s Handbook
The reveal that the monk subclass would be undergoing the most changes is just one of the new factoids shared by Crawford at GenCon. Previously, Crawford had explained whyArtificers wouldn’t be in the2024 Player’s Handbook, and, thanks to the new book being shared withScreen Rant, other class and subclass changes are immediately noticeable as well.
It is worth noting, however, that playtests of the Warrior of the Elements subclass were possible already, and some info had been shared viaD&D Beyondback in July. The response to the monk subclass change has mostly been positive so far. From whatScreen Ranthas seen of the subclass so far,Warrior of the Elements will seemingly play better overall and is more in line with what players expect from monks.

While every class and subclass has received some tweaks, the change in gameplay is the most drastic for Warrior of the Elements, according to Crawford. Now that the2024 Player’s Handbookis out in the wild, news on other subclass and class changes will start trickling through. Of course, GenCon is also still going on, so some surpriseDungeons & Dragonsreveals may still be in store asScreen Rantcontinues to cover the event.
