There are many different reasons why you might need help with today’sConnectionspuzzle. There are an interesting mix of words, and it is anintimidating puzzle when you first open it up. Notably, almost every single word is a noun and only a noun, and, when there is no other grammar form included in aConnectionspuzzle, it can make it harder to figure out asyou cannot eliminate words with that information.
If you want to try out a new puzzle, you can look at theNYT’sSpelling Beepuzzleas a perfectly acceptable alternative. You will need all of the expanded vocabulary words you learned inConnectionstomake words out of the letters in this puzzle. You will get a set of letters in honeycombs that you can use to make all of the words you can think of, butwith the caveat that you must use the center letter in every word you make. It is a fun challenge, as well as being very nice to look at.

Today’s Connections Category Hints
DECEMBER 01 #539
If you came looking for some hints, we have come up with one for each category name. Today’s puzzle has a variety of categories, and while there are a couple of easier ones, some of them are a bit harder, particularly if you don’t spend a lot of time in a certain aisle at the grocery store. There are, however, ways to get around the traps laid out for you with a little bit of help.
12 Letter Boxed Strategies To Win Quickly
The Letter Boxed game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to connect letters to form words while using various strategies to win quickly.
If those hints are not enough, there aremore spoilers available for you to get you on the right track. First up are the category names in the box below:

“FREE ____”
RETREAT
SHELTER
I actually did not get this categoryuntil I had solved two others. That was mainly down to the fact that I had SHELTER, HAVEN, and RETREAT all together but couldn’t figure out what the fourth word likely was. PORT was added in later after I had eliminated it from a couple of other categories, but to me, aPORT is not necessarily a sanctuaryin the same way that any of the others are. The other three words are inherently a sanctuary, whereas a PORT is just a place you’re able to go.
JERSEY
PADS
It’s a sports category and it is oneI actually got done first! It’s crazy, right? However, in this case, it probably is due to the fact that while I don’t watch sports, I did play soccer for a surprisingly large part of my childhood. While soccer players don’t wear a HELMET or PADS, I already had CLEATS and JERSEY andthat was enough for me to put together the rest. It was a nice change from me not being able to get anything sports-related.
WONKA
YORK
This was actually the category that I thought was the hardest today. CHARMS reminds me more of Lucky Charms and not a candy brand that is fairly obscure today. KINDER is not very popular in the U.S. since they were banned for so long, but I do at least recognize it as well as WONKA.YORK would be very easy to combine with PORT and JERSEYas a possible city. I think what bugs me here is that these aren’t “candy names” but rather “candy brands” and that feels like an oversight.
“FREE ___”

SOLO
WILLY
In this last category, I actually got second. It was a combination of seeing WILLY and SOLO and knowing that they were both related to the word “free.” However, I was very convinced at the time that PORT was in this category.Freeport is a very well-known cityand one that I have visited, and it was not until I was on my last guess that I got it right. Luckily, I was able to get the last two categories right after that and didn’t lose my streak, but it was close.
