Grand Theft Auto 6is still at least a few months away soplayers wanting a taste of Rockstar’s revamped Vice City need to check out this elaborateGrand Theft Auto 5mod. One of the most exciting aspects ofGTA 6is the return of Vice City, a fictional stand-in for Miami that’s become an iconic location for fans thanks to its neon-soaked atmosphere inGTA: Vice City. It’s been over two decades since its PlayStation 2 debut so Rockstar’s definitely made plenty of improvements, but until the studio shows off more, fans are creating their own upgrades.
Over on X (formerly Twitter), creatorDark Spaceshowed off theirgigantic mod that translates some of what’s been shown ofGTA 6intoGTA 5and the result is impressive. “Project Vice” is a playable version of theGTA 6map as interpreted by a fan who’s clearly spent a great of time with the franchise, stitching together everything highlighted in the game’strailer with the blueprint established in theVice Citygame. The result is staggering as Dark Space even shows off their creation with a lengthy trailer that demonstrates the add-on’s scale.

While it’s worth noting that Dark Space’s take onGTA 6’s map isn’t reflective of Rockstar’s game,it’s still interesting to see what Vice City looks like when rendered in modern graphics.The PlayStation 2 versionhasn’t aged especially well as most of the world is very blocky and angular, so seeing it translated into a more realistic vision is fun. While theDefinitive Editiondid improveVice City’s presentation, it retained the older style so it’s not really on par withGrand Theft Auto 5’s aesthetic.
Based on the first trailer forGrand Theft Auto 6,it’s clear that Rockstar is pushing the boundaries of what players expect in an open-world game. The level of detail in everything from the vistas to the masses of people active on the beachfront is evidence that the developer wants to make a statement. Dark Space’srecreation of the map inGTA 5may be fairly basic in comparison, but at the very least it allows excited fans toset their expectations forGTA 6.

I think it’s obvious how excited players are forGrand Theft Auto 6asthe lack of new information has pushed creative fans to develop their own content. With the release date inching ever closer, the hype is only building so I have to imagine that more mods like “Project Vice” will soon be common in theGTAcommunity. Rockstar has hinted that players can expect to officially return to Vice City in late 2025 but it remains to be seen whether the game is still on track tohit that release window.
