Ahsokaseason 2 is perfectly primed to connect one key character to theStar Warssequel trilogy, and it would resolve many issues I still have with the sequel movies. Although I enjoyedStar Wars: The Force AwakensandStar Wars: The Last Jediwell enough, even I have to admit there were someproblems with the sequel trilogy. The Palpatine plot twist was disappointing in my view, but there were a host of other issues with the movie as well, many of which had to do with the trilogy changing hands multiple times and the inconsistent story that followed.

Although many ofStar Wars’recent TV shows have been set in the New Republic era, betweenReturn of the JediandThe Force Awakens, there’s still plenty of work to be done to properly set up the sequel trilogy. AsAhsokaseason 2may very well be the furthest along in the New Republic era so far, the show could be the perfectStar Warsproject to bridge the sequels to all that has come before. If that’s the case, one major character fromAhsokacould be the key to this connection.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Threat Can Only Go So Far

We Know Thrawn Isn’t Successful Because Of The Sequel Trilogy

TheAhsokafinalerevealed that Grand Admiral Thrawn was on his way back to the mainStar Warsgalaxy, no doubt hoping to bring together the Imperial Remnants and take power for himself. Thrawn also hasthe Nightsisters of Dathomiron his side, making him a genuine threat to the New Republic.Thrawn’s threat to the galaxy is diminished somewhat by the fact that we already know he doesn’t win, though.

Who Is Grand Admiral Thrawn? Star Wars Villain Origin & Future

Featured as the major villain of Ahsoka, Grand Admiral Thrawn will define the Mandalorian era. Here’s all you need to know about the Empire’s heir.

In the sequel trilogy, there is no indication that Thrawn ever took over.Ahsoka, and perhaps other projects likeThe Mandalorian & Grogu, will no doubt retcon this era somewhat to indicate that a major battle did occur, even if it wasn’t mentioned throughout the sequel trilogy. Even in that case, it’s clear that Thrawn doesn’t ultimately come out victorious, as he’s not in the sequels whatsoever, and other villains, such as Snoke and eventually Palpatine, are the ones with the power.

Ahsoka Season 2 Could Give Thrawn An Incredible Legacy

Thrawn Could Connect The Dots In The Sequel Trilogy In The Perfect Way

The fact that Thrawn isn’t in the sequels and therefore clearly doesn’t win in the end could make the stakes forAhsokaseason 2 seem much lower. Yet,there is one possibility for this story that could not only make the show more compelling but also make the sequels so much more interesting. Perhaps Thrawn does ‘win’ in a sense, bringing together the Imperial remnants to establish the First Order.

Were that the case, it would give Thrawn an incredible legacy. This would also explain why the sequel trilogy’s First Order feels like such a copycat of the Empire (one of the biggest complaints aboutThe Force Awakens, which was applied to the similar characters as well). In this case, Thrawn would be trying to replicate what Palpatine had once built. This would also makeAhsokaseason 2 a type of villain origin story for the sequels, the First Order in particular, which would be a brilliant connective thread.

This may also lead intoThe Mandalorian & Grogu, depending on how the timeline of these upcoming movies and shows is structured. IfStar Warswas going to have such a major reveal about the sequel trilogy, it would make sense for this to be done in a movie rather than in a show.PerhapsAhsokaseason 2 will lay the groundwork for Thrawn’s power grab, andThe Mandalorian & Groguwill depict the full-fledged battle.

Star Wars Movies

Star Wars Still Needs To Connect To The Sequels

The Sequel Trilogy’s Reception Hasn’t Changed All That Much

Star Warshas made great strides towards improving some of the issues with the sequel trilogy in recent years through the franchise’s TV shows. Shows likeStar Wars: The Bad Batch, for example, have worked to explain Palpatine’s return throughProject Necromancer. Those problems still haven’t been entirely resolved, though, andthe perception of the sequels as some ofStar Wars’worst movies remains.

Every Star Wars Movie, Ranked Worst To Best

Looking at all nine Skywalker Saga entries and three spinoffs, we crown the best Star Wars movie in our full ranking of the galaxy far, far away.

This could be one major way forStar Warsto address this continued negative reception of the sequels. By giving Thrawn a major hand in the events of the sequels,Ahsokaseason 2 could give the sequels a bit more legitimacy and better set the stage for the rise of the First Order and the fall of the New Republic. Hopefully,Ahsokaseason 2, and perhaps a number of other upcomingStar Warsprojects will reveal that Grand Admiral Thrawn himself was the one to begin the rise of the First Order.
