A popularPower Rangersfan theory from when Zeo was airing would’ve changed the show forever but was quickly proven wrong. WhenPower Rangersfinally moved away from theMighty Morphinera in 1995, the show had the chance to reinvent itself with new costumes and Zords. Instead ofZyuranger,Power Rangerswould now be based onOhranger, aSuper Sentaishowwith a slightly different color scheme. Pink Ranger Kat was the only one to keep herMMPRcolors, with everyone else from the previous show either leaving the team or getting a new color.
Tommy, who was the White Ranger for most ofMMPR, became the Zeo Red Ranger. Rocky, who replacedJason as the Red RangerinMighty Morphinseason 2, was now the Blue Ranger. The Blue spot on the team was open because Billy Cranston decided he no longer wanted to be a Power Ranger and offered to help his friends from the Command Center rather than join them on the battlefield.Billy’s Zeo crystal was given to Tanya, who became the team’s Yellow Ranger. Lastly, Adam went from Black to Green. However,Zeoeventually introduced a mysterious Gold Ranger.

Billy As The Zeo Gold Ranger Would’ve Changed The Trajectory Of Power Rangers
Billy Was Not The Gold Ranger Despite All The Hints And Clues
WhenPower Rangers Zeointroduced the Gold Ranger – a character who would never appear unmorphed and avoided talking to the rest of the heroes – many assumed that he was going to be revealed as Billy. Theoriginal Blue Rangerand the Zeo Gold Ranger would never appear in the same together, and Billy was always doing something somewhere whenever this new character showed up. The fact thatBilly started to wear a lot of black shirtsalso added to this theory.Power Rangerswas clearly dropping hints to support that theory, but it was all a red herring.
Trey of Triforia/Jason
Zeo Gold Ranger
It turned out thatthe Gold Ranger was not Billy after all but rather Trey of Triforia, a warrior from a planet in which every person was actually three people at the same time. Trey of Triforia eventually revealed himself to the Power Rangers but warned that he was not going to be able to use his Gold Ranger powers for much longer. Tommy and his team would have to find someone else to be the Gold Ranger going forward. The choice seemed obvious, but once again, the theories about Billy becoming the Gold Ranger were wrong.
Jason As Zeo Gold Was Great, But Billy Would’ve Been Even More Interesting
Billy Rejoining The Team As A Power Ranger Would’ve Been Very Exciting
Power Rangers Zeoestablished that Billy could not become the Gold Ranger because had absorbed too much negative energy at the end ofMighty Morphin. Sadly, Billy didn’t rejoin the team as a Power Ranger and was written out of the story midway through the series.Billy went back to Aquitar, home of the Alien Rangers, where he married a local. David Yost has previously talked about how he was harassed on the set ofPower Rangersfor being gay and eventually walked out of the show (viaNo Pink Spandex).
Billy returned to Earth at some point and started Cranstons Technologies, although he is still married to Cestria.

The Gold Ranger spot was given to Jason, marking the return of Austin St. John toPower Rangerstwo years after his departure. While the idea of havingTommy become the Red Rangerwith Jason coming in as the sixth Ranger – the opposite of their original dynamic – was a lot of fun, I would have loved to see Billy as the Gold Ranger.Billy Cranston was the only one of the original five Power Rangers still on the showby that point and deserved a “power up.” The real-life circumstances behind Billy’s exit make it all even more disappointing.
Billy Would Only Appear In Power Rangers Again 27 Years After Zeo
David Yost Returned For Once & Always And Cosmic Fury
It took almost three decades for Billy to return after hisZeodeparture. Interestingly, while not having Billy as the Gold Ranger was underwhelming, the fact that he never changed Ranger colors made his Blue Ranger legacy more impressive. Characters like Jason, Tommy, Adam, and Rocky had two or more Ranger colors, whereasBilly became forever known as the Blue Ranger. In his long-awaited return in 2023’sMighty MorphinPower Rangers: Once & Always, Billy was using his classic powers alongside the rest of the original team. Billy also used hisMighty Morphinpowers inCosmic Fury.
Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s Ending Explained: Is It The Last Power Ranger Season?
Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s final episode saw the defeat of Lord Zedd and even included legacy Megazord cameos, but was it the end of Power Rangers?
Once & Alwaysestablished that the original Power Rangers got back together at some point and restored their original powers. After the death of the original Yellow Ranger in a fight against Robot Rita, Billy helped guide Trini’s daughter, Minh. InCosmic Fury, the original Blue Ranger served as a mentor and even created the Cosmic Morphers, allowing the former Dino Fury Rangers to get new costumes and powers. Even though he never became the Gold Ranger inPower Rangers Zeo, Billy would remain one of the most important characters in thePower Rangersuniverse.
