Warning! Spoilers ahead for Green Lantern Corps #1!It’s a new day for the DC Universe’s ring-slingers, and they’re embarking on a new mission that could result in one of the strongest incarnations of theGreen Lantern Corpsever. The Corps has been through some dark days, but a new opportunity has presented itself in the form of some unexpected Lanterns.

InGreen Lantern Corps #1by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, and Oclair Albert,John Stewart and histeam (which includes the newly-deputized Sinestro) are on Tamaran to stop a ‘Fractal Lantern’ named Vexar’u, whose fear has created a construct of the goddess X’Hal.

John and Sinestro Argue in Defense of Fractal Lanterns DC

Sinestro convinces Vexar’u that she has the willpower to destroy her construct, which she does, and impresses John enough to make her a Green Lantern. On Oa, John and Sinestro explain thatthe Fractal Lanterns have power that can be guided to produce more powerful members to fill out the Green Lantern Corps' winnowed ranks.

The Green Lanterns are Recruiting the Mysterious Fractal Lanterns

The Corps' Newest Members Could Make the Organization More Powerful Than Ever

The Green Lanterns' previous leader, Lord Premier Thaaros, went power mad after seizing control of the organization. In a bid to attain unquestionable power, Thaaros had the Green Lanterns destroy every other Central Power Battery in the Emotional Spectrum. The mysterious energy source began acting erratically, first by creating a new sadness-based Lantern, then creating Fractal Lanterns, beings who could manifest emotional energy simply by feeling intense feelings. The Corps managed to get rid of Thaaros, butthe destruction he caused is still being felt in the DC Universe and the Green Lanterns are still picking up the pieces.

Sinestro and John’s idea makes sense. Those who are able to feel such intense emotions that they manage to tap into what’s left of the Emotional Spectrum does suggest that they’re naturals at manipulating emotional energy. And those, like Vexar’u, who can overcome powerful emotions like fear must have the willpower necessary to be a Green Lantern. The Corps needs members, and they need powerful ones at that. If Sinestro and John are right, all the Green Lanterns need to do is seek out the Fractal Lanterns and train them to reinvigorate the Corps.

The Emotional Spectrum’s Damage is a Good Opportunity for the Corps

On the surface, the idea of Fractal Lanterns should be terrifying. Think about it, anyone who feels intense rage or fear could manifest powers they don’t know how to deal with. But those who manage to tap into what’s left of the Emotional Spectrum are also broadcasting their ability to the Green Lanterns and showing that they have the potential to be a Corps member as well. After what the Corps has just been through, the Green Lanterns can’t pass up an opportunity like that.

The Fractal Lanterns might not know the power they’re tapping into, but they’re already ahead of most newbies when they first put on a Power Ring. With the right guidance and leadership, they can be turned into the strongest batch of Lanterns the Corps has seen in years. This new mission might be risky, but it might just give theGreen Lanternsthe overhaul they need right now.
