InThe Boys #40by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Hughie is looking up information on the Supes of theworld in Vought-American’s filesin order to suss out their origins and possible weaknesses. While searching, Hughie stumbles across Vought’s information on a supervillain known as Galaxius.
Galaxius is an enemy ofThe Boys’take on Mister Fantastic, Reacher Dick, and according to the files, there’s only one protocol to ‘handle’ him. The only way to defeatThe Boys’presumed and unseen riff on Galactusis for Reacher Dick to stretch his hand large enough to sexually gratify Galaxius.
The BoysHas a Galactus and No Way of Defeating Him
The Boysis a satirical take on the superhero genre and lampoons nearly everything about superhero storytelling. In this world, heroes (or Supes as they are known) aren’t the stalwart heroes found in Marvel or DC Comics, they’re selfish jerks at best and amoral criminals at worst. But these heroes have the backing of Vought-American, the conglomerate that helped bring Supes into the world. To make their creations seem even more fantastic,they put out comics filled with lies about the Supes, making it seem like they actually lived lives full of adventuresand battles with dangerous supervillains.
Hughie’s discovery of Galaxius is interesting and raises a lot of questions. All the Supes inThe Boys’universe are created by Vought-American and none of them have genuine superhero backgrounds. So Galaxius isn’t some embodiment of entropy like Galactus is. However, Galaxius seems to be just as indomitable, since the only protocol listed to defeat him is to engage with him sexually rather than kill him or disarm him by some other means. Even Homelander, considered to bethe apex Supe ofThe Boys’universe, isn’t considered as a possible means of taking Galaxius down.
A Supe More Powerful Than Homelander is a Missed Opportunity
Galaxius is Real, But His Story Wasn’t Meant to Be
One could argue that Galaxius wasn’t real and that he was just a story made up by Vought-American like so many other fictions they generated. But Hughie discovered this in the conglomerate’s files, so yes, Galaxis is a real Supe (or some other powerful being) and unlike Homelander, Vought-American didn’t have a way of killing him if it came to it. That’s an intriguing idea that, unfortunately, isn’t ever explored in the series. But given the frankly icky contingency plan to deal with Galaxius, it’s probably for the best that readers never saw the one Supe that dwarfedThe Boys’Homelanderin power.
