Set in the United States,Supernaturalfollowed Sam and Dean Winchester’s 15-year journey across the United States in an effort to save people and hunt various supernatural monsters. As a result of the show’s substantial amount of lore and story, there have been a lot ofbig changes sinceSupernatural’sseason 1until the show’s conclusion in 2020. One of the biggest changes came about due to the stakes problem that the fantasy show faced each season, leading to the introduction of parallel worlds inSupernatural’smultiverseas one of the main story arcs in the show’s final seasons.
Regardless of the growing threats against the world, for the most part,Supernaturalfollowed the general premise of two brothers on a low-budget road trip. This premise meant that the Winchesters were consistently on the road in their trusty 1967 Chevrolet Impala, something which is cherished by both the characters and the fanbase, asthe Impala provided stability for the Winchesters after they lost their home. However, in season 8, Sam and Dean Winchester discovered the Bunker for the first time, a location which would become pivotal in future seasons and marked one of the mostimportant moments inSupernatural.

The Location & Origin Of Supernatural’s Bunker
The Bunker Is Not Far From The Winchester’s Home
Supernatural’sBunker was first introduced as a concept in season 8, episode 12, “As Time Goes By,” due to the introduction of Henry Winchester and the Men of Letters. Strangely, the Bunker is located in Lebanon, Kansas, theWinchester’s hometown as established bySupernatural’sseason 1, episode 1.The mysterious building once belonged to a secret organization known as the Men of Letters, the “preceptors, observers, beholders, chroniclers” of supernatural phenomena, and was originally created in 1932. The construction took three years, with the first case investigated being that of Dorothy Baum, whose father was a Man of Letters himself.
Dorothy Baum, daughter of Men of Letters’ L. Frank Baum, is a hunter who became trapped in the Bunker for decades after binding herself to the undefeatable Wicked Witch. She makes her first appearance inSupernaturalseason 9, episode 4, “Slumber Party.”

According to Robert Singer,Supernatural’sexecutive producer, Adam Glass, “came up with this idea, and we really latched on to it immediately”citing that “it’ll become kind of a home base for the boys.” Among its first occupants were Peter Jenkins and James Haggerty, members of the Men of Letters, who helped investigate the disappearance of Dorothy Baum and the Wicked Witch of the West, as stated in season 9, episode 4, “Slumber Party.” However, Sam and Dean soon made the Bunker their home, and it became one of the mostimportant things for the characters in laterSupernaturalseasons.

Two main corridors branch off from the War Room, leading to several different rooms, including bedrooms, showers, living quarters, and storage areas. Interestingly, the Bunker even has a shooting range, a dungeon, a kitchen, a garage, and an infirmary. The most prominently featured room is the library, as the Winchesters often congregate there, and it was even the site of one ofSupernatural’ssaddest deaths.

After rescuing the refugees from Apocalypse World, many of them could be seen around the Bunker as it became their base of operations, with Sam posing as their leader.Supernatural’sBunker has often had guests, such as Mitch Davies and Charlie Bradbury, however, it is uncertain just how many spare rooms the Bunker has.The Bunker has at least 24 room numbers unaccounted for, although other rooms such as the Laundry Room may occupy one of those numbers, but it can be assumed a lot of them are bedrooms, especially due to the influx of refugees staying at the Bunker.

How Sam & Dean Acquired The Bunker In Supernatural
Henry Winchester Was A Member Of The Men Of Letters
Sam and Dean acquired the Bunker inSupernaturaldue to the Winchester family’shistory with the Men of Letters. In 1958,Henry Winchester (Sam and Dean’s paternal grandfather) enters a Men of Letters building and finds its occupants slain by the demon Abaddon. A survivor gives Henry a box bearing the Men of Letters’ symbol, and Henry escapes by diving into a portal bound for the future. Upon meeting his grandsons, Sam and Dean, Henry tries to return to his time after reading John Winchester’s journal, realising that his son thought his father had abandoned him as a child.
Arriving at the Bunker, Sam and Dean are shocked to find the place has power after 80 years of abandonment, and they quickly settle in.

Henry’s escape attempt is thwarted when Abaddon takes Sam hostage, and he dies after helping the Winchester brothers kill Abaddon.Henry gives Sam and Dean the mysterious box that the Knight of Hell had been after, which was previously explained by Man of Letters, Larry Ganem, to contain a key to a “supernatural mother lode.” Arriving at the Bunker, Sam and Dean are shocked to find the place has power after 80 years of abandonment, and they quickly settle in. The Bunker’s introduction was pivotal for the Winchesters inSupernatural’slater seasons, as it gave them long-lost invaluable hunting knowledge.
The Bunker’s Powers, Protection & Warding Explained
The Men Of Letters Protected Their Secrets
to protect the secrets of the Men of Letters, the Bunker was heavily warded in order to keep out even themost powerful creatures inSupernatural.Larry Ganem explained that “It is warded against any evil ever created.”Most of the Bunker’s warding was designed by Cuthbert Sinclair, the former Master of Spells for the Men of Letters, and was used to prohibit the entry of any supernatural beings and monsters. However, Castiel and Jack were able to enter the Bunker freely as it was apparently not designed to keep out Angels, despite warding existing to do so.
The Bunker appeared to be warded against most supernatural beings, except for those deemed more peaceful, such as Angels and Zannas (although Archangels were warded against). Sam and Dean also seemingly allowed the demon Crowley to enter at will.

The Men of Letters lack of warding against Angels also had negative effects, as Gadreel’s presence resulted in Kevin’sdeath in theSupernaturalepisode, “Holy Terror.” Mrs Butters is another being able to surpass the Bunker’s warding due to the Wood Nymph’s position as the building’s protector. However, quite a few beings have also managed to break through the warding and enter the Bunker, causing carnage, such as Amara and Alternate Michael, who physically destroyed the celestial warding keeping them out. Following Amara’s destruction of the celestial warding, the Darkness, God, the Empty, and Death could enter the Bunker freely.
What Supernatural’s Bunker Contains
There Are Many Archives Of Unknown Objects
The Men of Letters Bunker is home to many different archives full of scrolls, books, and artifacts. It is also home to a collection of vintage vehicles, including theWinchester’s famous Impala. The library walls are covered with bookcases, containing files and books documenting things like the accounts of every exorcism conducted over three hundred years, case files, incident reports, information on allying hunters, obscure spells, mythological lore, and more. Sam and Dean often used these archives in their research into the latest threat, as they discovered new information they had never heard of before in the hunting community.
Supernatural’s 10 Best Supporting Characters Who Stole The Show
Supernatural may center on the Winchester brothers, but a number of supporting characters definitely stole the show over the course of 15 seasons.
While looking through the Bunker’s artefacts, Dean finds the Spear of Destiny, which bears a resemblance to the one seen inConstantine, and one of the six Keys to Oz;a powerful artefact that served as a quick and safe way to travel into the magical realm of Oz. Both Sam and Dean have also brought items back to the Bunker for storage, such as Dean’s Purgatory Blade which he displayed in his room. Yet, while the Bunker was an important part ofSupernaturalfor its vast knowledge, it primarily served as a home for the Winchestersfor seven seasons.
