Of course, this opensSkeleton Crewup to some interesting cameos, Easter eggs, and potential crossovers. One guest star fromThe Mandalorianseason 3 is already confirmed to appear (Marti Matulis will return as the pirate Vane), and more might be on the way. And yet, whileSkeleton Crew’s fresh new take onStar Warsis undeniably intriguing,the show’s connection to the rest ofStar Wars’New Republiccontent highlights that another storytelling approach may have worked even better for the show’s core premise.

Skeleton Crew Faces Two Huge Obstacles
Before it has even premiered,Skeleton Crewfaces two major obstacles. The first of these obstacles is that the child actors’ ages restrict the show’s future.Skeleton Crewfinished filming in January 2023 and was originally slated to be released that same year, but in the end, it was pushed back by external circumstances and other projects likeAhsokaandThe Acolyte. Presumably, filming will have taken several months, if not an entire year – as such, by the time the show finally comes out at the end of this year, the children involved will have grown significantly.

As a result,a second season (with the same cast, at least) seems highly unlikely, unless a major time skip is involved.That’s a shame, of course, because if these characters end up being as enjoyable as the show’s promotional material so far has made it seem, audiences will get very little time with them. A different storytelling medium could have prevented this issue, but Lucasfilm has become incredibly focused on producing live-action TV streaming content. Perhaps they’ve become too focused on it.
Secondly, while it’s understandable that Lucasfilm wants to capitalize onThe Mandalorian’s gargantuan success and use other projects to promoteThe Mandalorian & Grogumovie,placingSkeleton Crewinto the same timeline has the potential to make this all unnecessarily complicated.The Mandoverse has become its own thing –The Mandalorian,The Book of Boba Fett,Ahsoka, and now, presumably,Skeleton Crewwill all need to be watched to have a full understanding of the galaxy’s state duringThe Mandalorian & Groguand the as-yet-untitledMandalorianmovie. Is that really in the audience’s or the franchise’s best interest?

Though a few familiar characters made an appearance too – Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia Organa, Lando Calrissian, Mon Mothma, and Saw Gerrera, for instance –Star Wars Rebelsforged an entirely original path, one which has now affected the live-action Mandoverse substantially as well. It would have given the show more creative and narrative freedom, the characters’ ages wouldn’t have mattered, and it wouldn’t feel as forcibly linked toThe Mandalorian,Ahsoka, and more as it does now that it’s live-action. It could have referenced those events, certainly, but now, it almost feels like the show needs to be watched, which may alienate certain viewers.
