Martha Walker’s Role & Connection To Juliette Explained
Martha Walker Saved Juliette’s Life In Silo Season 1
Martha Walker is portrayed as an electrical engineer in Apple TV+‘sSilo. Like Juliette, she lives in one of the lower levels of Silo 18 and never leaves her workshop. As many story developments inSiloseason 1 suggest, Martha Walker has always been a guiding figure for Juliette. Even whenHolston left to clean inSiloseason 1, Juliette visits Martha’s workshop to tell her everything that happened between her and Holston before he died.
Silo: What Happens To Juliette In The Books
Before finally reaching a well-rounded closure, Juliette’s story goes through many ups and downs, highs and lows in Hugh Howey’s original Silo books.
Walker also plays a crucial role in convincing Juliette to become Silo 18’s Sheriff when Juliette almost gives up the title after learning the truth about George Wilkins’ past. Long before Juliette moved to the lower levels of Silo 18 and met Martha Walker,Walker was also married to Carla, a worker from the Supply department. However, the two eventually ended their marriage, which seemingly left a significant impact on Walker’s mental health.

Why Walker Doesn’t Leave Her Workshop In Silo
Walker’s Inability To Leave Reflects Her Deepest Fears
Siloseason 1 never explains why Martha Walker refuses to leave the comfort of her workshop. However, flashbacks suggest that even when she became Juliette’s “adoptive” mother when Juliette was 13 years old, she had not left her workshop for quite some time. Martha Walker’s agoraphobia might have something to do with how she and others are forced to live in the Silo. InSiloseason 2’s episode 1, she describes one of her dreams to young Juliette in which everyone leaves her behind in the Silo. Her dream suggests thatshe has a deep-seated fear of abandonment and isolation.
According to the originalSilobooks’ lore, there are 144 levels in Silo 18 with each being 40 feet tall.

Martha Walker’s inability to leave and fear of being left behind serves as a solid metaphor for how the Silo is meant to be a symbol of safety and certainty for the people living in it. Yet, because of the rules and restrictions imposed on the citizens by the higher authorities, the Silo becomes a representation of entrapment and exploitation, preventing citizens like Walker from truly connecting and moving beyond their comfort zones. Martha’s separation from her former partner, Carla, might have further encouraged her to retreat into the confines of her workshop, prompting her to stay in her safe harbor.
Owing to Walker’s decision, it would be fair to say that she plays a crucial role in saving Juliette’s life in Silo season 1’s ending.
However, inSiloseason 1’s ending, Martha Walker overcomes her fear when she realizes Juliette needs her help. After leaving her workshop for the first time in 25 years, she visits Carla and ensures that the Mechanical’s strong heat tape is applied to Juliette’s suit when she leaves Silo 18 to clean. Owing to Walker’s decision, it would be fair to say that she plays a crucial role in saving Juliette’s life inSiloseason 1’s ending.
What Juliette’s Flashbacks With Walker In Silo Season 2 Really Mean
Walker Was A Guiding Force For Juliette When She Was Younger
Flashbacks inSiloseason 2’s opening episode further highlight how Martha Walker became a motherly figure for Juliette after she came to lower levels of Silo 18. She not only helped her accept her mother’s demise but also equipped her with the right tools and skills to become a resourceful young woman in the future. Walker’s guidance is the primary reason why Juliette eventually becomes one of the leading engineers in Silo 18’s Mechanical and also proves to be a worthy leader after Holston nominates her as the Sheriff.
