The latestPokémon HOMEreward, a shiny Meloetta, highlights the issues associated with the Pokémon cloud storage platform. Even as a tool for trainers to use across the latestPokémongames, including the mainline series andPokémon GO,it is being established as a standalone experience and impacting players. The restrictions behind the new shiny Meloetta will push players, presenting a problem that has surfaced with this application.

Pokémon HOMEintroduced a way to transfer trainers' Pokémon from different games for various purposes. It is designed to help players store their favorite Pokémon or collect Pokédex entries in one place, either on their Nintendo Switch or through iOS and Android devices. It is the modern version ofPokémon Bankfrom the Nintendo 3DS era, and connects across more platforms than its predecessor. It succeeds as a useful tool for dedicated trainers, but the latest push for event rewards like shiny Meloetta may outweigh its advantages.

Requirements For Getting Shiny Meloetta

Trainers Need To Catch Em All, And Then Some For The Shiny Legendary

In order tocollect the shiny Meloetta inPokémon HOME,trainers need to complete the Paldean, Kitakami, and Blueberry Academy PokédexesinPokémon Scarlet and Violetand transfer them to theirPokémon HOMEapps. Players will need to have access to the DLC,The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, to complete two out of the three Pokédexes, as the exclusive Pokémon that come with this DLC are required. Another condition is that Pokémon that go towards the Pokédex need to be caught inside ofScarlet and Violet, so any Pokémon that are transferred from another game do not count towards the Pokédexes.

Which Pokémon Can’t Be Transferred From Pokémon HOME After SV Update

Although the latest Pokémon HOME update has introduced over 100 new Pokémon to Scarlet and Violet, many more are still absent. Here are all of them.

There is already a way tocatch a normal Meloetta inPokémon Scarlet and Violet, but this reward throughPokémon HOMEis the first ever official way for trainers to obtain the shiny version of the Legendary. The requirements to claim one through the cloud application are difficult, as any ambition of completing a Pokédex tends to be. But the shiny Meloetta offer presents a lot of problems with the platform, from how tedious it is to how much of an investment it may become for players.

The Problem With Completing Pokédexes In HOME

The Commitment Is Like Any Other Pokédex, But Is More Of A Grind

Transferring every single Pokémon fromScarlet and ViolettoPokémon HOMEis a tedious task all for one shiny Legendary. If players have already completed all the Pokédexes inScarletorViolet, then it does not matter toPokémon HOME. One copy ofeach Pokémon from the Paldea, Kitakami, and Blueberry Academy Pokédexes needs to be transferred toPokémon HOMEin order to collect shiny Meloetta. The amount of grinding time that is needed for these requirements to be met might feel like it is not worth it at all, and it is not the only problem.

Pokémon HOMEincludes an option for a paid subscription called a Premium Plan, and those who do not have access to it run into the application’s transfer limits.Without the paid plan, trainers can only transfer 30 Pokémon in total. This restriction prevents anyone without a Premium Plan from possibly obtaining the shiny Meloetta at all, since all three of theScarlet and VioletPokédexes total 1,000+ Pokémon. Alongside the DLC required for access to the Kitakami and Blueberry Pokédexes, it is asking players to spend more money to get this shiny.

Pokémon HOME As A Service Still Has Flaws

The Pokémon Cloud Platform Contains Layers Of Difficulties For Trainers

Pokémon HOMEhas contained other problems before this latest Meloetta offer. There are two different versions of the app – one for mobile and the other for Nintendo Switch – and both are required to really take advantage of the cloud system. The achievements are also repetitive for players, almostbeing identical to the in-game rewards of completing Pokédexes from the mainline on the Switch. This, alongside the barrier that is created by its paid subscription for a promised higher-quality experience, can make the service overall not worth the dedication.

Can You Transfer Pokémon From Pokémon Sleep To Pokémon HOME & Other Games?

Pokémon Sleep is a new mobile app, which allows players to capture Pokémon after a night of sleep-monitoring. Here is how it connects to other games.

There is little reward for the extra effort put into completing the Pokédexes inPokémon HOME, so the attempt to isolate it as its own collection space with special rewards is not currently that successful. Trainers also have only seen a few gift Pokémon per year since the platform was first released in 2020.The shiny Meloetta is currently the only gift Pokémon presented in 2024, with the previous gift event being from over a year back in May 2023.

The latest gift event fromPokémon HOMEpresents everything that is flawed and tedious about its system and what it offers players. With shiny Meloetta being so difficult to obtain, locked behind grinding three full Pokédexes and a possible paid subscription wall, there are issues trainers may run into if they are looking to obtain this exclusive Legendary. Even with features liketransferring old Pokémon to newer games likeScarlet and Violet, the long-term cons seem to outweigh the pros ofPokémon’s storage platform.
