Sakamoto Dayshas ended its first half on a relatively high note with episode #11, and it left plenty to be excited about for episode #12 and the second half, as a whole. It was a surprisingly low-key episode for a midseason finale, but with everything that’s been set up, in addition to its charm by itself, there was still plenty to love from start to finish.

In the second half ofSakamoto Daysepisode #10, Sakamoto’s group encountered Wutang, a high-ranking member of Lu’s old mafia family who wanted her to come back and lead the group. Lu refused, of course, and since Wutang knew he couldn’t beat them in a fight,Wutang challenged the group to a game of wits where he would get Lu if he won and Sakamoto would get information about the one responsible for his bounty if he won. Episode #11 was a fitting conclusion to that story, and episode #12 will certainly be an even greater follow-up this July.

Sakamoto Days Episode 10 Review: A Surprisingly Quiet Penultimate Episode

Sakamoto Days Episode 10 In Review

Despite being the last episode before the midseason break,Sakamoto Daysepisode #10was a surprisingly quiet one. Not only was it surprisingly light on action, but even the story content was toned down from previous weeks, with it prioritizing comedy and character actions over plot, even if the second half did have some notable setup for how the overarching narrative would advance once more.TheSakamoto Daysanime slowing down its pacing in the lead-up to its midseason finale is a very odd decision on the anime’s part, and it left things feeling noticeably anticlimactic.

That being said, the decision was ultimately for the best. After so many weeks of little more than action and heavy plot developments,Sakamoto Daysneeded to do something to slow things down and give both the characters and the audience a break, so as out of place as it might feel,Sakamoto Daysepisode #10 needed to be structured the way it is to provide some much-needed levity after such an intense story arc. In that sense, it’s hard to find fault withSakamoto Daysepisode #10, and episode #11 was much of the same in that regard.

What Happened In Sakamoto Days Episode 11?

Produced By TMS Entertainment; Directed By Yoshihide Ibata

Sakamoto Daysepisode #11, “Casino Battle”, picked up where episode #10 left off with Sakamoto’s group competing with Wutang to see who could earn more money at a casino. With Sakamoto’s assassin skills and Shin’s telepathy, they were able to fake their way through the various games, despite neither of them knowing the rules, and it was easy for them to make big winnings at every turn. Soon enough, the challenge came to an end, andSakamoto’s group ended up tied with Wutang.

With the two parties in need of a tiebreaker, Sakamoto’s group and Wutang entered into a game of Old Maid, as it was the only game everyone knew how to play. Before the game could end, though, Wutang’s followers, fed up with doing things his way, turned on him with plans to kill everyone and take Lu back to China by force. Hurt by the betrayal and his allies’ willingness to threaten Lu,Wutang worked with Sakamoto’s group to take down his former allies and decided to leave the family to become Sakamoto’s latest employee.

The key visual for Sakamoto Days' second half

Back at the convenience store, Wutang told everyone that Slur was the one who put the bounty on Sakamoto’s head, something the group was already told by Nagumo. What they didn’t know, however, was that Slur had apparently killed four infamous murderers on death row, something outside of his usual patterns, and with a recent string of murders matching their styles, Wutang believed that Slur faked their deaths and broke them out of prison. Sure enough, the final scene showed Kashima hiring the death row inmates to kill Sakamoto, and Sakamoto’s group knew they had another fight to prepare for.

Sakamoto Days’ Midseason Finale Sets Up A Perfect Tone Shift For The Anime

Sakamoto Days Will Be Bigger Than Ever In Its Second Half

Sakamoto Daysepisode #11 was mostly just setup for the second half of season 1, but it was nonetheless great to see. Sakamoto and his friends having to deal with a quartet of powerful death row inmates is far above anything that’s happened so far, and based on that, the second half ofSakamoto Daysseason 1 will likely be where the anime goes through a major tone shift to be more serious and action-oriented. Even withSakamoto Days’ inconsistent production, a shift like that would be great to see, and it’s something all fans should be looking forward to.

Sakamoto Days Still Needs To Do Better Wits Its Anime

Why Sakamoto Days Is Still Far From Perfect

WithSakamoto Dayshaving reached its midseason finale, it’s easy to see all the positives and negatives the show has to offer. For starters, the writing always does a great job of balancing comedy with serious drama, especially in the later episodes, and as inconsistent as the animation is, the good moments are still really good and perfectly lend themselves to the creativity of the fight choreography. Add in how fun the characters are to watch, andSakamoto Days, despite its flaws, is always fun to watch more often than not.

That being said, the negatives are, unfortunately, too prevalent to ignore. Even if the animation isn’t the worst, it’s still largely lackluster and a far cry from the stellar choreography of the manga, and the way theSakamoto Dayskeeps cutting contentdoesn’t help give it a good impression, either.Sakamoto Days’ overall direction has been incredibly flawed from day one, and while it’s hardly the worst thing to watch, a story likeSakamoto Daysdeserves far better, something that will hopefully come to fruition in its second half.
