After months of speculation and leaks, thePlayStation 5 Prohas finally been revealed. Yesterday,a technical presentationwith thePS5’s Lead Architect, Mark Cerny, was announced, focusing on the PS5 and “innovations in gaming technology.” This description led many to believe the PS5 Pro was on the way, and a further unlisted video titled “PS5 Pro” cemented that this would be the case.
In the live stream on the officialPlayStationYouTube channel, Cerny confirmed thatthe PS5 Pro would be an improvement over its predecessor due to three main features: An improved CPU, advanced Ray Tracing, and AI-driven upscaling called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). With these combined, players are able to get far greater visuals at a higher frame rate, with the new console boasting double the power.
The PS5 Pro will also have a larger SSD, with 2TB, which is double the amount in the 2023 model.

The examples showed how the PS5 Pro compares to both the PS5’s Fidelity and Performance modes, with thenewer hardware allowing for far more detail, even in larger areas such asRatchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s parade scene, orMarvel’s Spider-Man 2’s open world. The overall result, as Cerny pointed out, was “increased sharpness to the graphics, or smoother and more responsive gameplay.”

2024 has only just begun, but the PS5 is already off to an incredible start, delivering a number of must-play titles in a variety of genres.
In the case ofHorizon Forbidden West, the increased GPU has proven to be particularly effective, with the extra graphical power not only providing a detail boost but alsoenhancing lighting and visual effects such as smoke or clouds, as well as the flowing movement of hair, and general cinematics. As for the advanced Ray Tracing, this was showcased inGran Turismo 5andHogwarts Legacy, where the cars in the former and grand environments in the latter boasted far better reflections and shadows than before while supporting 60FPS gameplay.
