Summary

For over a decade now,Hakihas been the dominant superpower inOne Piece, but it’s been noted to be used rather inconsistently. While it’s presented as something every high-level fighter should have in one way or another, numerous characters will be thrown into high-level positions without the story even suggesting that they have Haki, the Straw Hat Pirates being one of the most egregious examples.

One Piece’s implementation of Haki also causes problems for characters introduced before it was a major focus of the series, as it makes it odd that some powerful characters were never shown using Haki before the timeskip. One Piece’s villain Sir Crocodile, in particular, has always caused confusion due to his lack of Haki, but fortunately,One Piecehas finally made a definitive statement on whether Crocodile can use Haki.

That adds a lot to the extended role Crocodile’s gained in recent years, and it’s sure to add a lot to his character when it shows up in the actual manga.

One Piece Finally Confirms That Crocodile Has Haki

Crocodile Confirmed To Have Armament & Observation Haki

The Vivre Cardis a collection of cards released every few years with canon information about variousOne Piececharacters, with them often being used to clarify details that were left undefined in the manga. While the latest Vivre Cardwon’t be released until early September, Crocodile’s entry was released as an early preview, and thanks to that, the latestVivre Cardconfirms that Crocodile can use both Armament Haki and Observation Haki, despite him never using either in the actual story.

As for when Crocodile first developed Haki, that’s harder to explain. Crocodile notably never used Haki in his debut, even though he logically should have known it, but since he started operating in the New World after the Paramount War, it might be thatCrocodile didn’t develop Haki untilOne Piece’s timeskip, likely due to the fighting he did in the New World. Of course, Crocodile’s lack of Haki inOne Piece’s pre-timeskip eracould also be because Eiichiro Oda didn’t have all the details of Haki worked out, so with any luck, the series will further clarify things soon.

Crocodile Couldn’t Be Where He Is In One Piece Without Having Haki

Regardless of when Crocodile developed Haki, it makes perfect sense for him to have it with the positionOne Piecehas recently put him in. Crocodile is the most important he’s ever been to the story now that he’s becomea founding member of Cross Guild, an organization that quickly rose to be an Emperor’s crew, and as such, it makes perfect sense for Crocodile to have Haki when he’s set to be one of the major players inOne Piece’s final saga. It would be hard to justify his prominence without that, and overall, it’s a great thing to see.

Crocodile having Haki also works as a payoff to an early statement made about the New World. At the end of Fishman Island, it was brought up thatLogia users overreliant on their powers don’t last long in the New World, with Pekoms taking Caribou out in a single hit to emphasize that point. Thus, Crocodile having Haki also works to highlight one ofOne Piece’s most defining moments regarding Logia users. Overall, and it’s sure to lead to something great later down the line.
