The newest line of accessories offers a rare glimpse of a special move that’s been around since the Gen 1 titles.

New Pokémon TCG Merch Shows Candid Interactions With The Doll
The Attack Can Be Useful In A Pinch But The Doll Is Just Cute
The Substitute move has existed throughout thePokémonfranchise with a relatively unchanging description. The move does no damage, instead acting as ashield to protect the Pokémonfrom incoming attacks. Instead, the ability uses some of the Pokémon’s health tocreate a decoy with a portion of the Pokémon’s HPto stand in place of the defending mon. The decoy then takes damage for its creator until it’s knocked out. The move can act as an evasive maneuver in a pinch, keeping Pokémon safe while their trainers figure out the next move.
Pokemon TCG’s Worst Problem Is Starting All Over Again
The Pokemon Trading Card Game is dealing with extreme shortages of its new set Prismatic Evolutions, leading to comparisons with pandemic-era issues.
The new line of merch doesn’t show the move in use as a decoy, depicting it instead as more like a doll and the adorable interactions it might have with curious Pokémon. The designs show a Squirtle immediately accepting it into its Squirtle Squad by giving the doll its own pair of cool shades, a happy Driftloon attempting to abduct it, a Larvitar blending in nearly perfectly among a group of the dolls, a Pikachu wearing a hoodie in the form of the doll, and a few other whimsical moments.

The Pokémon TCG Substitute Merch Line Celebrates An Underrepresented Design
The Doll Doesn’t Show Up In Merch Often
The Substitute doll from Gens 1 and 2 took on an appearance similar to Rhydon, but in subsequent generations, the doll acquired a distinct design. Now,the cute green critter looks more like a dinosaur than a Pokémonand stands its ground with a large smile. Despite being a literal doll, the move isn’t represented too often in Pokémon merch. In fact, only three forms of the doll have existed until now: a keychain and two Poké plushes.
There are currently over 1,000 Pokémon across nine generations, and atenth generation is reportedly in development, so it’s not too surprising that any design that isn’t actual Pokémon or their trainers don’t get the chance to be featured too often. Still, it would be fun to see other attacks and skills depicted byPokémon Trading Card Gamemerch, and definitely more of the adorable dino-like Substitute doll.
