The Menéndez Brothers Claimed They Thought Their Father Was Going To Kill Them

Throughout the first trial,Lyle and Erik Menéndez’s defense team argued that they murdered their parents out of self-defensebecause their parents, José and Kitty, abused them during their upbringing. So, they were hoping for a manslaughter verdict rather than being convicted of first-degree murder. Lyle and Erik took the stand and detailed the sexual abuse they allegedly endured at the hands of their parents from a young age (six years old) up to the days before the murders. Lyle said his father stopped abusing him when he was eight, while the abuse continued for Erik until the murders.
