Zordon is one of the most recognizablePower Rangerscharacters, but his most iconic line gained a whole different meaning 30 years after the events ofMighty Morphin Power Rangers. InPower Rangersseason 1, episode 1, “Day of the Dumpster,”Zordon and Alpha assembled a team of five teenagersfrom Angel Grove who what it took to become superheroes. Zordon would usually end his mission briefings by saying“May the power protect you”to the Rangers, a line that would continue to be used on the show for years to come.
For example, in “Forever Red,“original Green Ranger Tommyis the one to say“May the power protect you”to his peers. In Cosmic Fury, “May the power protect you”was even used as part of a song written by Black Ranger Javi. The fact that this line still echoes in thePower Rangersuniverse is particularly interesting considering thatZordon died in 1998 at the end ofPower Rangers in Space’s “Countdown to Destruction, Part II” – or at least we thought so.

Zordon Appeared As A Different Person But Used His Iconic Line
InPower Rangers Cosmic Fury’s finale, we learn that Zordon is still alive. This was the first proper confirmation that Zordon wasn’t gone forever since 1998, but it was not a very straightforward reveal.While Zordon was alive, he no longer had an actual body– not even his classic tube of energy – and instead manifested himself as another person. Zordon chose to appear as Zayto, the Zenith Ranger when talking to the Gold Ranger. Russell Curry, who plays Zayto inDino Fury/Cosmic Fury, got to play Zordon for a few minutes.
David Fielding was the face of Zordon duringMighty Morphin, with Bob Manahan voicing the character.
When the scene starts, it isn’t clear who the Gold Ranger is talking to. Zayto was about to die in the real world, so it seemed like his spirit was reaching out to his best friend Aiyon. Another interpretation was that the Morphin Grid, which gives every Ranger their powers and holds everything together, was manifesting itself in the form of Zayto. However, at the end of the scene,this mysterious person says a line that they used to tell their apprentices –“May the power protect you.”This confirmed that Aiyon was talking to Zordon the whole time.

For a show with a lot of inconsistencies, plot holes, and retcons, it is quite remarkable thatPower Rangersnever messed with Zordon’s fate for 25 years. While the show moved away from Zordon and Angel Grove after 1998, I was glad to see that the events ofPower Rangers in Space’s finale remained so significant to the franchise for decades. Even Rita’s return as a good person in Mystic Force worked within the context of her redemption in “Countdown to Destruction.” However,30 years afterMMPR, Zordon’s return was inevitable.

One of the greatest Power Rangers episodes of all time delivered an interaction that every 1990s kid who watched the show had dreamed of seeing.
On the one hand, Zordon’s sacrifice was one of the greatest moments inPower Rangersand should never be retconned. On the other hand, celebratingPower Rangers’ 30th anniversary in 2023 without featuring or at least acknowledging Zordon would have been a mistake. Interestingly,Power Rangers: Once & Alwayssaw Billy trying to bring Zordon back, only to restore Rita Repulsa’s evil essence instead. However, at the end ofCosmic Fury, Zordon officially returned.

Cosmic Fury is currently the final entry in thePower Rangerschronology, with the future of the show yet to be announced. Even though theNetflixPower Rangersrebootis reportedly no longer happening, it’s difficult to say whether there will be aPower Rangersseason 31, or if the show will reinvent itself. IfPower Rangersmoves forward with a reboot or a reimagination of the franchise, we may never see the payoff of Zordon’s return. In the final seconds ofCosmic Fury,original Blue Ranger Billy Cranston learned from Aiyon that Zordon was alive.

It was the fact that Aiyon said“May the power protect you”that made Billy realize that the entity who had appeared to the Gold Ranger was actually Zordon. If this storyline is never revisited, at least Billy got to learn that Zordon was not really gone. The Power Rangers’ mentor still lives inside the Morphin Grid and has probably watched over his pupils ever since his “death” in 1998. Naturally, ifPower Rangersever rebootsMighty Morphinfor movie or TV again, we’ll probably see a new take on Zordon.
