After teasing an upcoming Secret Lair,Magic: The Gatheringrevealed a new Deadpool-themed drop today for “April ‘Pool’s Day.” The drop features a mechanically unique Deadpool card, as well as some reprints that players could use in a Commander deck in Deadpool’s color identity. Aside from being a pleasant surprise, Deadpool’sMagic: The Gatheringdebut also perfectly captures the Merc with a Mouth’s sense of humor.
Deadpool is well-known in Marvel Comics and his self-titled movie series for breaking the fourth wall. Wizards of the Coast has done a good jobtaking this defining quality of the character and translating it to hisMagic: The Gatheringcard.Magic’s Universes Beyond can be a mixed bag, so it’s always nice to see Wizards nailing it with their depiction of a character from an outside IP.

Deadpool’sMagic: The Gatheringcard from hisSecret Lairis called Deadpool, Trading Card. The name works on multiple levels, asit is both literally a trading card, and also has the ability to trade its text box with another card on the field. This is the type of cheesy meta joke that feels perfectly suited to Deadpool (or at least depictions of the character that don’t get bogged down in crude humor or catchphrases). Deadpool’s ability will also create a major annoyance for another player, not dissimilar to how he often gets under the skin of his enemies or even his allies.

Magic: The Gathering’s recent crop of Tarkir: Dragonstorm previews gave us an important correction to a mistake from the original 2014 Tarkir set.
Now there is one gripe to be had withMagic’s depiction of Deadpool, that beinghis healing factor doesn’t seem to be represented on the card. This Deadpool is far less durable than his comic book counterpart, and doesn’t have a way to come back to life. However, the fact that Deadpool’s textbox exchange lasts even after he leaves the battlefield could be seen as a nod to his near-immortality, since he’s still effective after he dies.
Deadpool’s Secret Lair Also Includes Some Powerful Reprints
Deadly Rollick Is An Expensive And Powerful Removal Card
Although Deadpool, Trading Card is the only mechanically unique card in this Secret Lair, that doesn’t mean it’s the only exciting inclusion. Notably, the spell Deadly Rollick is a powerful form of removal,and costs about half of what this Secret Lair does all on its own. Saw in Half also synergizes very nicely with Deadpool, allowing you to steal two more card textboxes from your opponents. The card’s new art tips you off to using it this way, as it shows Deadpool being cut in half.

Magic: The Gathering has revealed first details of its upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man crossover set, including its release date, bundles, and new cards.
While Vandalblast and Blasphemous Act aren’t very rare cards, they are still staples in a lot ofgood Commander decks. If you were to put together a Deadpool deck, you would probably have included these cards anyway, so it is nice that this Secret Lair comes with special Deadpool versions of them. Overall, this is one of my favorite Secret Lairs coming out ofMagic: The Gatheringlately, and I hopethe game’s future Marvel cardscontinue this trend of flavorful design.
