This post contains a PREVIEW for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2
Supreme LeaderKylo Renis about to learn some key truths aboutDarth Vaderand his connection to the scorching sands of Tatooine. Despite telling Rey inThe Last Jedito let the past die, Kylo is now being shown an alternate path, one where he can instead embrace his past ahead ofThe Rise of Skywalker. To that end, the stage has been set for Kylo Ren to learn the full extent of his grandfather’sStar Warshistory on the arid desert world.

In the new preview forStar Wars: Legacy of Vader #2by Charles Soule and Luke Ross,Kylo Ren has agreed to be shown Darth Vader’s history by Vaneé, the Dark Lord’s former servant. Having lived for decades in service to the dark side, the caretaker of Vader’s fortress on Mustafar is nothing more than a human head suspended in a droid apparatus during the sequels.Nevertheless, this new preview sees Vaneé bringing Kylo Ren to Tatooine, Darth Vader’s home world as a boy, as well as the planet where he first truly experienced and embraced the dark side’s power:
Seeking to compare Vader’s history with Kylo’s,Vaneé is determined to prove to the Supreme Leader that the past can be a great asset to fuel one’s power in the dark side of the Force, just as it did for his grandfather in theStar Warstimeline.

Vader’s Past Fueled His Power in The Dark Side
Much Of His Darkness Originated on Tatooine
As Vaneé reveals to Kylo via his access to Palpatine’s old files, Tatooine was where Anakin was first recruited by the Jedi Order, leaving his mother a slave on Tatooine It was also where he met Padmé, the love of his life and future mother of his children. Years later,Anakin would return only to arrive too late to save his mother from a band of Tusken Raiders, resulting in his first true embrace of the dark side when he slaughtered the entire tribe, consumed by his rage and grief.
This Genius Darth Vader Theory Turns Obi-Wan’s Death Into The Beginning Of Anakin’s Redemption
After Darth Vader killed Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope, the Jedi’s death may have acted as a catalyst that kickstarted Vader’s redemption arc.
According to Vaneé.Tatooine was part of what made Vader’s life a crucible and that his past was the “blade in his soul, slicing away all that held him back so that he might rise to greatness.“While the lava of Mustafar was where Vader was born, Kylo Ren quickly learns that the “scorching sands” of Tatooine played their role as well, with Anakin’s past serving as a source of fuel for Vader’s power as a Dark Lord of the Sith. As such, this is something Vaneé believes Kylo Ren can achieve as well.

Kylo Ren Is Seeking To Emulate His Grandfather’s Power
Embracing The Past, Rather Than Letting It Die
Legacy of Vader #2is also the issue containing the reveal thatVader once returned to Tatooine and killed Watto, the Toydarian who once owned him and his mother as slaves. As such, it’s clear that Vaneé’s lesson for the Supreme Leader has only just begun in these first few preview pages. However, it does seem likely that learning about his grandfather’s past will resonate with Kylo Ren, and that we’ll hopefully receive some new reveals about Kylo’s past as Ben Soloand his history as the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa and the Jedi apprentice to Luke Skywalker, his uncle.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2is on sale March 12th from Marvel Comics.

Ben Solo/Kylo Ren
The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben was manipulated by Palpatine through the Force for most of his life, influenced toward the dark side of the Force. A misstep by Luke Skywalker ultimately left Ben feeling he had no choice but to embrace the dark side, and he became Kylo Ren, a key figure in the First Order. Kylo Ren’s heart remained deeply divided, however, even after he ascended to become Supreme Leader of the First Order. He was ultimately redeemed by Rey, with whom he shared a remarkable Force bond, and by the love of his parents.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
Conceived by the will of the Force itself, Anakin Skywalker was the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring the Force into balance. Anakin struggled to balance competing attachments to the Jedi Order and his wife Padmé Amidala, and ultimately fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. For years he served as Palpatine’s right hand man, but he was ultimately redeemed by the faith of his son, Luke Skywalker. Now a Force Ghost, Anakin continues to act as an agent of balance.
