Spoilers for the ending of Stone OceanJoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’sarcs frequently end in dramatic fashion, butPart 6, Stone Ocean, has the other seasons beat as the most controversialamong the fandom, for a handful of reasons. Primarily, viewers take issue with the fact that rather than Jolyne defeating the main villain of her arc, she passed the torch to someone else to complete the job instead.

Understandably, some fans also have lodgedcomplaints about the complete reset of the universe that occurred in Part 6, effectively ending the Joestar bloodline and rebooting everything that had been established in theJoJo’s Bizarre Adventureuniversethus far. These two bold moves were not mistakes though, and actually allowed Araki the creative liberty to make the following arcs ofJoJo’seven better and more unique than before.

As the Most Dynamic Joestar, Jolyne’s Story Deserved a Different Ending From Other Arcs

Stone Ocean’s Conclusion Reveals How Far She Has Come as a Character Through Her Willingness To Pass the Torch

Jolyne’s journey in Stone Ocean is inspirational because she was not born a hero like other Joestars before her, she becameJoJo’sbest protagonistthrough character development. In her early life, she was a criminal who even landed herself in jail, for a crime she did not even commit that time. Rather than wallow in her defeat and the injustice of the situation she was in, Jolyne thrived. She awakened her Stand, reconnected with her father, Jotaro, in order to battle evil, attempted to stop Enrico Pucci from resetting the universe, and recruited a group of friends to her cause.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Strongest Protagonist Almost Ruined the End of Part 6 (But Only Manga Fans Will Know It)

Giorno Giovanna is considered to be JoJo Bizarre Adventures’s strongest protagonist, and he was almost certainly meant to be in Stone Ocean.

The friendships Jolyne fostered in prison would later come in handy, because it was one of these friends who triumphed over Pucci in the end. Jolyne might have died before Pucci’s loss, buther sacrifice was the perfect culmination of her character arc, as she selflessly gave up her own life for Emporio’s sake. A younger version of Jolyne would never have endangered herself for someone else in this manner, but the matured, wiser version ofJolyne at the end of Stone Oceanhad no qualms about dying for a good friend, because she knew Emporio was more than capable of winning.

Stone Ocean’s Ending Allowed Araki More Creative Freedom in Future Parts ofJoJo’s

Araki Gave the Joestars the Satisfying Ending They Deserved by Bringing Their Rivalry With Dio to an End

In all other priorJoJoparts, the main Joestar of the season was the one to defeat the villain, soJolyne’s story completely changed up this standard formula, annoying some viewers and delighting others. The idea of “passing the torch” is common in anime, from All Might passing his Quirk to Deku, to mentors like Nanami and Gojo ceding their starring roles to protagonist Yuji, and Jolyne followed this pattern by allowing Emporio to win instead of her. Emporio’s success in the battle set a precedent for futureJoJo’sarcs that the protagonist does not have to be the one to deal the final blow.

Another remarkable aspect ofStone Ocean’s endingthat makes itJoJo’sgreatest conclusion is the possibilities it opened up for the rest of the story going forward. Emporio might have defeated Pucci in the end, but not before the evildoer managed to reset the universe, which eliminated the Joestar family for good. Although Emporio did reunite with new versions of his old friends, the original cast of characters disappeared, meaning any following arcs would be an entirely fresh start, rather than a continuation of the same story that had been steadily progressing since Part One’s Jonathan Joestar’s introduction.

Part 6 Is Unlike Any OtherJoJoEnding, and That Is Why It Stands Out as the Best

The Tragically Beautiful Conclusion Was Necessary To Complete the Joestar Family’s Story

Since Jonathan and Dio’s first interactions, it was clear Dio’s grudge against the Joestars would be a long-standing one, but this conflict could not sustain the story forever. After six Parts ofJoJo’s,it was time for Araki to take the story in a new direction, which he put into action bygiving the Joestar family’s story a full circle conclusionthrough allowing Jotaro and his daughter Jolyne to band together for one final fight. Stone Ocean’s ending could not be more perfect, because by changing everything viewers came to expect from previousJoJoendings, it ushered in a successful new age of the franchise.

How JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean Makes Jotaro A Secret Villain

Jotaro returns in the latest installment of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Stone Ocean, but his actions are no longer being framed in a good light.

Many fans mourned the originalJoJo’suniverse and the familiar Joestar family, but by rebooting the story, Araki was able to take a lot more creative liberties with future arcs, like Part 7’s Steel Ball Run, which quickly became a fan-favorite. The first six Parts ofJoJo’sare foundational and important, but eliminating the Joestar bloodline did add a fresh twist to the story that never could have occurred otherwise, so in a way, theJoJo’sStone Ocean ending was a blessing in disguise thatended the rivalry between Dio Brando and the Joestar family with finality.
