WARNING: This article includes SPOILERS from Creature Commandos episode 3.TheCreature Commandoscast and showrunner break down the events of episode 3 and the heartbreaking ending for one of the bigDC Universecharacters. WhileCreature Commandosseason 1 is still early in its run, that doesn’t mean the stakes aren’t there, asJames Gunn’s DC Universe canonhas already led to one of the major players to face their doom. Following his heroic moments inCreature Commandosepisode 3, G.I. Robot was destroyed by Circe in this chapter of the show’s big battle.

DuringScreenRant’sexclusive interview with Sean Gunn, who plays G.I. Robot, and Zoë Chao, who voices Nina Mazursky, forCreature Commandosseason 1,the episode 3 death was brought up, as Sean Gunn addressed the shocking fate of one of his characters. However, Gunn was also asked whether or not this is the last that fans have seen of G.I. Robot, as he gave the following response:

G.I. Robot playing Jenga in Creature Commandos Season 1 Ep 1

Sean Gunn: Well, he’s not just a robot. Andy, that’s the great thing about him. There’s some sort of spark in there. I don’t know what it is or where it comes from, but when his friends and Easy Company accept him, he feels good. It’s almost something confusing, like, ‘What is that? What is that emotion that I’m feeling?’ And then he doesn’t get to feel for a long time. He feels it again with Nina. I think that there’s something in there that that I don’t know what it is, but that elevates into something a little bit more than a robot. And if you may tell, I’m evading your question [laughs] - I wouldn’t be able to comment. You’re free to speculate yourself what you might be able to do with a robot. But that’s above my pay grade.

AsCreature Commandosseason 1 saw the growing development between Nina and G.I. Robot, Chao was also asked how the death of her new ally would affect her character going forward in the rest of the season. In terms of what G.I. Robot’s death does to Nina,Chao stressed that viewers will see those effects on her throughout the upcoming episodes, by teasing the following:

Zoë Chao: I think she’s gutted. You have a lot in store for the rest of the season. Andy, just get ready, there’s a lot more coming to you. But yeah, we as an audience get to feel the heartbreak of G.I. Robot being killed through Nina too, because they’ve really bonded, but she’s a tough cookie.

WhenScreenRantspoke withCreature Commandosshowrunner Dean Lorey about G.I. Robot’s sudden end, the executive producer stressed that, much like many DCU fans, he is also a major fan of the character. Without revealing too many specifics,Lorey teased that theCreature Commandosaudience shouldn’t give up on G.I. Robot just yet:

Dean Lorey: I’m not ready to say goodbye to him either! He’s my favorite character. I love G.I. Robot, and I would be brokenhearted if we didn’t find a way to see more of G.I. Robot - I wouldn’t give up on G.I. Robot.

What The Creature Commandos Showrunner & Cast’s Comments About G.I. Robot Mean

While theCreature Commandoscast and creative team remain cryptic, death isn’t always permanent in a superhero story, as there could still be ways for G.I. Robot to come back in the future. WiththeCreature Commandosstorybeing set for seven episodes, at least for season 1, a significant death makes sense at this point in the season. It also sets the stage for the remaining four episodes inCreature Commandosseason 1, especially with how things went down with Circe.

Even though the show is only three episodes in,it says a lot for Gunn andCreature Commandosthat a new player like G.I. Robot can have an impact on the audience this early into the series' run. That is one of the key and consistent takeaways from Gunn’s writing, especially with ensemble-focused stories - as seen withGuardians of the Galaxy,Peacemaker, andCreature Commandos, where the spotlight is on lesser-known comic book characters who still manage to resonate with viewers - which appears to bode well for otherDC Universe movies and TV shows.
