Rebecca Yarros, the author of the belovedEmpyreanseries, recently shared an exciting update on the upcoming Amazon adaptation ofFourth Wing. Yarros expressed immense enthusiasm for showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett’s work in herfirst reaction to earlyFourth Wingscripts, particularly praising her ability to capture the essence of the characters and their witty dialogue.

This is a significant development for readers and for theromantasy trend on streaming services, as accurate characterization and humor are crucial to translatingFourth Wingworld from page to screen. With good dialogue comes good character dynamics, without which the series would be far less compelling. Getting it right is essential to makingFourth WingAmazon’s answer to Netflix’s massive fantasy deal.

Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing Comments Suggest The Show Will Nail The Dialogue

Yarros Said She Was “Kicking Her Feet” Over The Script

Yarros recently confirmed that she has seen two drafts of showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett’s script for Amazon MGM Studios’Fourth Wingadaptation. Theupdate for theFourth WingTV show is promising, since Yarros stated,“I kicked my feet the entire time”while reading it. Walley-Beckett, who has also worked onBreaking BadandAnne with an E,has clearly impressed the writer with her treatment of the source material. Yarros added,“I could not be any happier. Like, she’s amazing,”(perE! Online). This must be ahuge relief for Yarros, who was scared to readthe screenplay.

Yarros additionally confirmed that Walley-Beckett has nailed the dialogue:

“Moira’s done such an amazing job capturing everyone’s voice and the dialogue that you guys love and just the energy and spirit of the book […] I could not be any happier.”

The core characters at Basgiath are at the heart ofFourth Wing, and Yarros has had to put a lot of trust in the showrunners’ hands with how they will translate to screen. This latest development is another promising sign that her work is in good hands. Yarros also has minimal input on the casting, but hopes for diversity. Despite a lot of speculation aboutcasting Amazon’sFourth WingTV show, Rebecca Yarros has said that she doesn’t have a ton of say in it (perE! Online), although she is standing firm in not whitewashing Xaden.

Good Dialogue Means The Fourth Wing Show Is Getting The Character Dynamics Right

Dialogue Defines The Group Dynamic In Fourth Wing

Fourth Wingtakes readers on a journey through Violet’s point of view, aside from Xaden’s POV, in the form of either bonus chapters or on occasions where their interior monologues merge. Spending so much time in Violet’s head means that the characterization of the supporting characters relies on their dialogue and dynamics with each other. Violet does a lot of bonding with her fellow riders inFourth WingandIron Flame, and their squad dynamic is well established byOnyx Storm.A crucial part of the adaptation is getting the military-style setting right, with cadet dynamics at the center.

Fourth Wing’s TV Show Will Be The Perfect Replacement For A Canceled Netflix Series That Deserved Better

Amazon’s Fourth Wing TV show is a highly anticipated series, and it could be the perfect replacement for a popular show Netflix canceled too soon.

The characters’ idiosyncrasies go a long way to endearing them to the reader. For example,“well the f**k aware”is a classic line that Violet and Xaden often use, imitating each other and emphasizing their mental bond with their shared phrases. A healthy dose of humor is essential to gettingFourth Wingright, so Yarros’ approval of the dialogue promises that the show will go beyond the fantasy spectacle aspect. In addition, Ridoc’s jokes are an essential ingredient in the group’s dynamic, so Yarros’ excitement points to this aspect of the series being done well.

The Great Characters Are Key To The Books (And Show’s) Longevity

As much as Rebecca Yarros has built an impressive fantasy universe in her books and dragons and magic would improve any TV show, I’m so glad the showrunners see the value of the characters and their friendships. Throughout the books, Yarros clearly values the other characters at Basgiath beyond their connection to Violet. Rhiannon’s rise to Squad Leader and family values make herone of the most compelling characters inFourth Wing, for example, and Violet’s friendship with her is not without its ups and downs with bring them closer. Ridoc and Sawyer also bring distinctive personalities and valuable qualities.

Overall, dialogue is at the core of the books…

I’m most looking forward to the treatment of Ridoc’s character with his unwavering loyalty to his friends underlying his wisecracks, but they all have unique traitsshown in their interactions. Another key part ofThe Fourth Wing’s dialogue that must not be overlooked is the use of sign, which some of the characters are proficient in when talking with Jesinia and others, like Sawyer, will learn. Overall, dialogue is at the core of the books, not only in spoken interactions but in mental dialogues with Tairn, Andarna, and Xaden, and if Yarros is kicking her feet, so am I.
