AStardew Valleyplayer found out at the worst possible moment that their in-game farmer is not the gender they had initially thought they were. The cozy farming and life sim has 12 romanceable characters and lets players date characters of any gender, regardless of their own.
While having aromantic moment with Sebastian, Reddit userSuspiciousBird72realized that Sebastian thought they were male. The realization came during one of Sebastian’s heart events thanks to a line of dialogue that reads, “I’ve never… felt anything like this with another guy before…” But it was somewhat of a surprise, since the whole time,they thought they were playing as a female farmer.

According to the post,it took the Redditor nearly an entire year before they realized they weren’t playing the gender they thought they were. The description states that this event happened in the Winter of the first year and that they “had no idea the whole time.” The confusion is understandable since farmers wear the same overalls no matter what their gender is and can choose from the same hairstyles.

Stardew Valley fans realize that ever since Update 1.6 was implemented, they can steal several decor items from outside NPC homes and more.
Fellow Redditorjasondoesstuffwrites a mock dialogue that might have happened and how ridiculous it would have sounded. Their comment shows Sebastian baring his heart to the farmer, saying “I’ve never felt this way with another guy before… but you’re different,” to which the farmer responds in disbelief, “I’M A GUY???” Several other comments point out thatthe farmer would have an identity crisis following this kind of moment.

In most other games, there would be nothing players could do to fix this situation other than restart the whole game. Luckily,developer ConcernedApe allows players to change their gender (and appearance) in a very lore-friendly way. Once players achieve a four-starrelationship with the Wizard, he’ll let them into the basement, where they can change appearance or gender for 500 gold.
Gingergirl1228chimes in to point out that changing genders will also reset the dog or cat to the default color, as perhaps the pets transition in solidarity, but more likely, this is just a glitch. Even if the player chooses not to change genders, the only thing this changes is some dialogue lines. Same-sex couples can still have a happy marriage and even adopt kids inStardew Valley.It’s extremely wholesome that Sebastian and the rest ofthe farmer’s potential suitorsdon’t care what gender the farmer is because, at the end of the day, love is love.
