The first look atBridget Jones: Mad About The Boyhas arrived and teases Daniel Cleaver’s (Hugh Grant) role in this new story, and it’s very different from past movies. Bridget Jones’ (Renée Zellweger) story isn’t over, and unfortunately, there has been a big tragedy in her family that is bringing her back for the closing chapter in her movie series. Based on Helen Fielding’s 2013 novelMad About The Boy,the fourthBridget Jonesmoviereunites the audience with the title character, now a widow and mother of two children.
Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) passed away four years ago while on a humanitarian mission in the Sudan. Struggling to cope with Darcy’s death and with life as a single mom,Bridget is encouraged by her loved ones to start a new chapter in her life, and she’s introduced to the world of modern dating. Accompanying Bridget in this new era in her life is Daniel Cleaver, her former lover and former friend of Darcy, who was believed to have died inBridget Jones’s Babybut was revealed to be alive at the end – and he has a whole new role now.

Daniel Cleaver Has A New Role In Bridget Jones’ Life
Daniel Cleaver was originally meant to be part ofBridget Jones’s Baby, but creative differences with Hugh Grant led him to drop out (viaPeople). To fill in the spot left by Grant’s Cleaver,Bridget Jones’s Babyintroduced Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), a billionaire mathematician Bridget meets and has a one-night stand with at a music festival. Jack became part of Bridget and Darcy’s love triangle as there was a chance he could have been the father of Bridget’s baby. Meanwhile,Cleaver was said to have died in a plane crash.
Cleaver appears as more of an ally of Bridget as she copes with Darcy’s death – though that doesn’t mean he can’t flirt a bit with her.

At the end ofBridget Jones’s Baby, it was revealed Darcy wasthe father of Bridget’s sonand they finally got married, whilea newspaper headline revealed Cleaver had been found alive. When Grant’s return was announced, it was expected thatBridget Jones: Mad About The Boywould have him as part of Bridget’s new triangle, but luckily, the trailer hints at this not being the case anymore. Cleaver appears as more of an ally of Bridget as she copes with Darcy’s death – though that doesn’t mean he can’t flirt a bit with her.
At the end ofthe trailer forBridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, Cleaver shows up at Bridget’s place and is greeted byher son, Billy, who calls him “Uncle Daniel”. This points to Cleaver and Darcy making amends at some point before the latter’s death (like in the book) and Cleaver being a much-needed support for Bridget now that Darcy is gone – after all, Cleaver knows her pretty well. This ends the tiring, messy, and toxic love interest storyline between Bridget and Cleaver, bringing freshness to the story and allowing the audience to wonder who Bridget will choose in this new chapter in her life.

Daniel Cleaver Isn’t Entirely A New Man
Daniel Cleaver might not be a love interest for Bridget anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s a completely different man. What makes Daniel Cleaver himself is how much of a playboy he is, so much so that Bridget learned the hard way (twice) that he’s not a man of commitment. The trailer forBridget Jones: Mad About The Boymakes sure to show that this side of Cleaver remains intact and everyone knows it – including Bridget’s children.
In the above-mentioned scene with Cleaver and Billy, the latter asks “Uncle Daniel” where the ladies “with the big [something]” are, with Daniel completing the question with “hair” and saying that all three of them are washing their hair and each other’s hair.Daniel Cleaver can still be his old self in his relationships, but not with Bridget, and it’s a huge relief to see that, at least with her, he has grown and changed enough to see her as a friend and be supportive of her and her family.
