The originalPokémongames had a PokéDex with just 151 entries. Those 151 entries were made up of the original 150 Pokémon and Mew. There was technically a PokéDex number for MissingNo, the glitch Pokémon that spawned under certain circumstances in Generation 1 games, which was Kanto Number 000. However, this is not a real Pokémon and does not have a real PokéDex entry. Since the release of the original 150 Pokémon, the game has undergone many changes, and Nintendo has released multiple generations of Pokémon with all-new monsters to collect.
Figuring outhow many Pokémon are in the PokéDexis no longer a cut-and-dry look at the numerical data in the PokéDex. For instance, Mega Pokémon, introduced inPokémon XandY, and Gigantamax Pokémon, introduced inSwordandShield, do not have independent PokéDex entries from their base forms. Thus, when only counting the number of Pokémon available by PokéDex entry, the count won’t include these unique Pokémon, despite them being independent in design and name from their base forms.

Removing advanced evolutions (48 Mega Evolutions and 32 Gigantamax Evolutions) and regional variants (59 Pokémon) leaves1,025 Pokémon entries in the National Dex or standard PokéDex. As of mid-2024,there are 1,164 total Pokémon, including advanced evolutions and regional variants. That’s over six times the amount of Pokémon that the series launched with in 1996.
