Summary

Marriage (and children) are far from permanent fixtures in aStardew Valleyplaythrough, but they’re arguablystill an important part of a player’s first run through the title. The first time I played the farming simulator, I weighed my options forromance partnersbut ultimately decided on Emily. My farmer fell for her crystal-girl energy and positive outlook. As part of my new life with my in-game spouse, Emily moves in and everything is going wonderfully. We talk about having kids (but don’t rush into anything), and occasionally, she gives me a hand with some of the things around the farm.

But imagine my surprise when I came home to find a random piece of furniture just dropped in the middle of my house. It was just a chair, butit looked tacky and out of place in the middle of the living room— not to mention it was annoying to move around. Emily, my beloved wife, happily informed me that the ugly chair was her doing. It did nothing to add to the ambiance, and I felt bad when I ultimately picked it up and put it away in a chest, never to be seen again. It was at that moment I decided thatthe worst part of my marriage would be Emily’s taste in furniture.

I’m Sick Of My Stardew Valley Spouse Ruining My House

They Have Horrible Taste, And It Makes Me Want A Divorce

Maintaining a good relationship with my in-game spouseadds yet another task to my farmer’s already long to-do list, and though I think Emily is worth it, I don’t think our marriage should entitle her to redecorate however she wants to without consulting me first. By our wedding day, I’ve usually completed multiple upgrades to my farmhouse (which Emily didn’t contribute to, by the way). My spouse has a lot of opinions on how I decorate our house, and given the imbalanced workload, I don’t think it’s particularly fair of her to leave a tacky chair in the middle of our living room.

Why these furniture pieces can’t be added to the little corner she’s already decorated is beyond me,

Sometimes a redesign takes more than a day to execute, and if I leave something in the way overnight I’m met with a snarky"You could have cleaned up in here a little while I was gone." To be honest, this doesn’t seem fair, given Emily’s ability to put things wherever she wants — even if they’re in my way! It’s a double standard that I’m personally not here for.

Though there’s no harm done to our relationship when I quietly put the third odd piece of furniture she just needed to have away in a chest, there are only so many chests full of unused furniture a person can have in their home. Why these furniture pieces can’t be added to the little corner she’s already decorated is beyond me, butthe AI imbued in theStardew Valleyspouses is particularly horrid.

Not Every Stardew Valley Spouse Is Created The Same

One Spouse Has The Worst Room Of Them All

Though Emily may have been my first-ever in-game spouse, I’ll admit (though a bit shamefully) thatI consideredmarrying Shanebefore making my final decision. I was feeling bad for the bachelor and dealing with a hard case of the I-can-fix-hims. His love for the chickens on Marnie’s farm humanized the messy man, and he even gave up drinking at seven hearts. It seemed like the farmer’s master plan to help him find meaning in life was working —until I looked up his room on the wiki.

After moving into my beautifully decorated home, Shane would get a little corner room to the side of the bedroom. While the other bachelors and bachelorettes craft corners that reflect their interests and personalities,Shane’s is a duplicate of the room he left behind at Marnie’s. I was appalled at the dirty footprints, clutter, and spilled beer (I thought he’d given up drinking). There was absolutely no way I would allow that to mess up the aesthetic I’d crafted.

Shane’s room only gets better if players install a mod that convinces him to clean up his filth — but this comes far too late into the marriage. As teased by Reddit userFlashShifter, after his 14-heart event, he’ll do some serious renovations to his little space in the home, trading the unused weights for a desk, the beer cans for a proper dresser, and even a larger (and actually clean) rug. But his ability to clean up after himself shouldn’t come just because he’s as in love with me as he possibly can be.

Marrying one of the locals inStardew Valleymay offer some perks, butdoes the occasional help around the farm or home-cooked meal make up for how they mess with the farmhouse I’ve so carefully crafted?Does Shane’s love for the chickens outweigh his absolutely messy corner of my otherwise great home? There aren’t any clear answers to these questions, but I’ve made my final decision: Emily will always be my go-to marriage candidate. But if she brings one more odd piece of furniture into my home, I’m filing for divorce.
