WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Hellbound season 2.

Hellboundseason 2 answered a few questions but introduced many other mysteries about the angels, the decrees, and the future of the world. After three years of waiting,Hellboundfinally returned with a second season. While the show included yet another time skip, it continued to follow the storylines set up inHellboundseason 1. This includes the return of Jeong-ja, whose resurrection was shown at the end of the first season.

Jeong Jin-su returned forHellboundseason 2as well, although the character was recast. Jin-su’s resurrection was one of many problems Sodo had to deal with amidst the war between the New Truth and Arrowhead followers. The government was also a major player in season 2 in the form of Secretary Lee. TheNetflix K-dramafocused on the social and political aspects of what was happening in the world, meaning that alot of questions about the angels and the demonstrations remain unsolved.

8Is Jin-su An Executor Now?

Jin-su Transformed Into A Monster At The End

Hellboundseason 2’s finalesaw Jin-su’s body slowly transforming into that of a giant creature that resembles the executors. Jin-su was having visions and seeing executors from the moment he was resurrected, which he assumed was happening to Jeong-ja as well since she had also been brought back to life. However, whereas Jeong-ja never forgot who she was and a had “peaceful” time in Hell,Jin-su was in pain and suffering the whole time. The former Chairman of New Truth had several visions in which he watched key moments of his life from the perspective of other people.

Kim Sung-cheol plays Jin-su inHellboundseason 2, replacing Yoo Ah-in.

Jeong-ja told Jin-su he was a coward, which is why he was so afraid of facing his inner demons and could barely remember who he was after being resurrected. It can be assumed that this is the reason Jin-su had so many visions and eventually transformed into a creature, whereas Jeong-ja slowly regained all of her memories and knew she had to reunite with her children. If Jin-su is indeed an executor now,it can be theorized that all executors we saw onHellboundwere once humans.

7What Are The Angels In Hellbound Exactly?

Hellbound Still Hasn’t Explained Its Greatest Mystery

Two seasons in,Hellboundstill hasn’t explained what the angels are and where they come from. It is also unclear what “Hell” is on the show. The religion Jin-su created led to the perception that the angels were sentencing people to Hell because they were sinners who could not be forgiven. However, it has been since established that Jin-su only created this doctrine to cope with the fact he had been sentenced to Hell when he was still a child. Likewise, the baby’s decree all but confirmed that the angels weren’t punishing sinners.

Therefore, all cards are still on the table for what the angels are and what their purpose is. Not even a sci-fi explanation involving different universes can be ruled out, especially because thehorror K-dramaconstantly makes a point about how people come up with different interpretations for something they cannot explain. Of course, the angels may be indeed a supernatural phenomenon that cannot be explained in any way.Hellbound’s story isn’t really about the angels and the decreesbut rather about how the world reacts to them.

6What Really Happens To The People Sent To Hell?

Jin-su And Jeong-ja Experienced Different Things

The demonstrations have always been the most gruesome scenes inHellbound, often including a lot of violence and screams before the executors finally burn their target alive. We can assume that those people actually die and were not just sent to another universe given that we actually see their bodies burn – but it’s unclear what happens after that. The angels are sentencing people to “Hell,” butwe don’t know if this Hell is supposed to match that of any religion or if it’s a different thing entirely.

20 Best K-Dramas Of 2024

There has been no shortage of incredible K-dramas in 2024, but some have defied expectations to become the year’s best shows in the genre.

The New Truth and most of the world believed that the Hell in question was the Christian hell or something similar, which tied into the idea that only sinners were suffering decrees. However, we know that this is not the case. We also know that both Jin-su and Jeong-ja have memories from when they were dead, meaning there seems to be a different plane of existence that the angels refer to as “Hell.”There’s also evidence that Hell inHellboundis different for each person, as Jeong-ja experienced something different from Jin-su.

5Are The Decrees Random In Hellbound?

We Don’t Know Why Those People Were Picked

While we know that the New Truth’s belief system was based on a lie that Jin-su came up with,Hellboundhas yet to explain whether the decrees are random. For every adult who was sentenced to Hell, anyone from any of the groups inHellboundwould be able to find a justification for why that person was receiving a decree. However, once a baby was sentenced to Hell only a few hours after being born, it became impossible to find any logical explanation for the angels’ sentences.

Either the decrees are random inHellboundor the angels have a purpose that is impossible to decipher. The fact that some people have been brought back to life after their demonstration, including the baby, makes everything more complicated. This mystery is connected to the question of what the angels and the executors are.Hellboundseason 2 preferred not to give any answers at all and arguably made the angels and the decrees more difficult to understand. Whether thesupernatural K-dramaplans to ever reveal the truth about the angels remains to be seen.

4What Does Jeong-ja Mean By “The World Is Ending?”

Hellbound Season 3 Could Be About The End Of The World

Once Jeong-ja came back to life, she started having visions from the future and even predicted how some people were going to die. She also predicted that the world was going to end and warned Hye-jin about it.We don’t know if Jeong-ja was being literal about how the world was going to end, or if she just could feel that the world was never going to be the same after what was happening. If Jeong-ja does believe that the world is ending, this may be the plot of a potentialHellboundseason 3.

30 K-Drama Thrillers That Will Have You Hooked

K-Drama thrillers have a reputation for being much wilder than their US cousins, but these unpredictable shows will have you hooked from episode 1.

In hindsight, the appearance of angels may have been the first sign that the world was about to end.Hellboundseason 3 could see how people would react to knowing that the entire world was going to end for some reason, which would surely lead to panic and add to the show’s themes of how humans behave when faced with something they cannot explain.Jeong-ja is arguably the most important character inHellboundconsidering her demonstration is what changed everything, so the fact she believes the world is ending must be very important.

3Why Were Some People Resurrected In Hellbound?

The Baby, Jeong-ja, And Jin-Su Were All Resurrected

Hellboundhas yet to reveal why people are being sentenced to Hell, but the show now has another mystery left to be solved – why were some people resurrected? The only three confirmed cases of resurrection inHellboundwere those of Jeong-ja, Jin-su, and the baby, the last of which was actually the first case. While everyone, including the characters and the audience, assumed that the baby had been spared, she was killed by the executors and sent to Hell. However,Hellboundseason 2 revealed that the baby was resurrected immediately.

The baby was resurrected within seconds of dying, whereas Jeong-ja and Jin-su only returned after years.

It’s difficult to find an explanation that applies to all threeHellboundcharacterswho have been resurrected. Jeong-ja and the baby had arguably no reason to face any punishment, whereas Jin-su had no problem killing and lying. However, if they were all sent to Hell, there must be a reason as to why they were eventually brought back. It’s also interesting how the baby was resurrected within seconds of dying, whereas Jeong-ja and Jin-su only returned after years.

2Why Did So Many Decrees Happen At The Same Time In Season 2’s Finale?

We Never Saw That Many Angels Appearing At The Same Time

While decrees have been happening non-stop for several years now inHellbound, the end of season 2 saw countless angels appearing around the country at the same time. Multiple people, including several New Truth and Arrowhead followers, received decrees shortly after Jin-su’s transformation. One interpretation is that the angels were punishing humans for how they had turned the decrees into different religions and were fighting over them, but that is just speculation.

15 Most Action-Packed K-Dramas, Ranked

While K-dramas might be known for their romantic dramas, many of the best shows have great action sequences and intense storylines to match.

The number of decrees happening inHellboundseason 2, episode 6 may also tie into the end of the worldprophecy shared by Jeong-ja. If countless people start being sentenced to Hell and dying all over the world, humanity could be facing extinction soon because of the decrees. Regardless, the end of season 2 strongly suggested thatHellbound’s story isn’t over and that this sheer number of decrees will play a role in a potential third season.

1How Will The World React To What Happened To Jin-su?

Jin-su’s exposure and transformation already had an impact on the world, but we didn’t have much time in the finale to see how society would react now that the leader of the country’s most popular religion was gone. Even thoughJin-su has been exposed, there may be those who will continue to believe that the decrees only happen to sinners. It’s also unclear what will be of the New Truth and Arrowhead organizations after everything that happened.

Even Sodo’s fate is left open after they try to blindside Hye-jin and kill Jeong-ja behind her back. Secretary Lee was trying to use the conflict between New Truth and Arrowhead for political gain, but she is now sentenced to Hell too. Without clear leaders and with hundreds – maybe thousands – of people sentenced to Hell, chaos will likely continue to spread. In other words,Hellboundseason 2 has left the door open for the story to continue.
