The following contains spoilers for Futurama season 12 episode 10, “Otherwise,” now streaming on HuluFuturama’slatest season finale is an exciting risk for the show that bears more than a little resemblance to how the series tried (and failed) to set up a new status quo in another previous revival.Futuramahas always benefited from having an ability to shift gears from episode to episode. Season 12 highlighted this by reminding viewers how muchhorror can fit intoFuturamaalongside the show’s more romantic, silly and philosophical sides. The show is even poised to take that experimentation further than ever in the upcoming season 13 and 14.

The ending ofFuturamaseason 12opened up a larger multiverse of possibilities. This risky but potentially exciting turn could allow the show to go to any extremes the creatives behind the scenes can envision. It’s also a twist that could easily be reversed, allowing the show to return to its typical setting and stories. What’s notable is thatFuturamaexperienced a similar conundrum between season 6 and Comedy Central’s revival of the show for season 7. The multiverse twist inFuturamaseason 12 could be undone in a similar way that undercuts the show’s newfound storytelling potential.

How “Otherwise” Sets Up A Similar Ending To “Into The Wild Green Yonder”

The episode ends with the Planet Express Crew lost amidst a sea of alternate realities. Futurama Just Confirmed That The Show’s Biggest Multiverse Fan Theory Is Actually True

Futurama season 12 has finally concluded, with the multiversal finale confirming one of the biggest fan theories surrounding the series.

It’s also functionallyvery similar to the ending of “Into the Wild Green Yonder.“That storyline ended with the Planet Express Crew on the run from the Nimbus. Encountering a wormhole, Prof. Farnsworth revealed the crew could use it to escape, but would have no way of knowing where they’d end up. The episode ended with the crew deciding to venture into the unknown together, with Fry and Leela solidifying their romance with a kiss as they did. However, the first episode of season 7’s revival, “Rebirth,” undid this by having the crew immediately crash back on Earth.

Futurama Season 13 Can Fulfill The Changes Setup Ruined By Season 6’s Ending

The idea of expanding an already out-there concept likeFuturamainto the unknown is exciting because it allowsFuturamato explore more genre tropes. Similarly, the crew’s adventures after season 6 could have taken them literally anywhere. Despite this, season 7 took away that potential by immediately bringing them back to Earth for some pointed (and quickly dated) cultural satire.Futuramaworks best when it pushes the boundaries of sci-fi and focuses on the show’s comedic cast. Adventures to unexplored worlds could have set up both. The upcomingFuturamaseason 13 has a fresh chance to do this.

Thanks to the multiversal ending of season 12, the Planet Express Crew could easily venture into any kind of setting or situation. However, it’s also possible that the show simply shifts back to Earth for new storylines, functionally repeating the way season 7undid the new development for the sake of resetting the status quo. While returning to New New York and their collection of supporting characters is important, seeing the Planet Express Crew go on new kinds of adventures inFuturamais too exciting a prospect to simply be dropped a second time.
