The biological mother returning for the baby made things very difficult and not easily solvable, as it would have gotten the authorities involved before deciding whether Calvin remained with the biological mother or was placed up for adoption. However,even standing on opposite sides of that debate taught Gabriela a lot about Audrey, unavoidably making her like herand wanting to offer her something that hopefully fixed one consequence of Audrey’s biological mother abandoning her, that Audrey was unable to learn to swim.
