The spinoff seriesFBI: Most Wantedreturned for its sixth season in 2024, but now the procedural has been canceled before season 7. Created by René Balcer from the series by Dick Wolf,Most Wantedfollows the agents of the FBI’s New York Fugitive Task Force as they use their investigative skills to track down some of the most dangerous wanted criminals from around the United States. A bit more focused than its predecessor,FBI,Most Wantedbrings all the intense case-per-week stories found in most procedurals, but with the added excitement of the high-profile nature of the FBI.

WhenFBIdebuted on CBS in 2018, it clearly had a lot of spinoff potential, andthe Dick Wolf universe showwasted no time in expanding intoMost Wantedin 2020. Keeping pace with the flagship show,Most Wantedhas been able to separate itself by investing in its characters more deeply than the usual cop procedural. As such,Most Wantedhas continued to grow and change across its near-decade on the air thus far, and that ability to evolve is what made it so popular. Unfortunately, theFBIfranchise has been trimmed down with the cancelation ofMost WantedandInternational.

CBS Cuts The FBI Franchise Down To One Series

the upcoming spinoffFBI: CIAis still in the works with the goal of airing a backdoor pilot in a future season ofFBI’s main series.

Though theFBIfranchise was never as popular as other multi-series offerings from the major networks, it has always been a big hit for CBS. Thus, it came as quite a shock whenCBS opted to cancel bothFBI: Most WantedandFBI: Internationalin early 2025.Most Wantedwon’t be returning for a seventh season, though the flagship show has already been renewed for seasons 8 and 9. Additionally, the upcoming spinoffFBI: CIAis still in the works with the goal of airing a backdoor pilot in a future season ofFBI’s main series.

FBI: Most Wantedseason 6 premiered on June 11, 2025.

What makes the decision so vexing is thatbothMost WantedandInternationalwere drawing in strong viewership numbers even in their last seasons. Though the flagship show averaged around 6 million viewers, the spinoffs each had viewership somewhere in the 4 million range, which is still quite high in the era of modern network TV. There are currently no plans to shop the two canceled spinoff to other networks at this time.

Which Agents Could Have Returned In Season 7?

Though the casts ofthe entireFBIfranchisehave changed a lot over the years,Most Wantedhas seemingly had the most consistent change from year to year. Since the show began, many of the cast members have departed, and there’s no way of knowing if that would have happened between seasons 6 and 7. It’s safe to assume that the Fugitive Task Force would have remained intact, including Dylan McDermott as Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott, leading the team.

The rest of the team should have returned as well, including stalwart cast members like Roxy Sternberg as Special Agent Sheryll Barnes and Shantel VanSanten as Special Agent Nina Chase. Meanwhile, it wouldn’t have been surprising to see Keisha Castle-Hughes return as Special Agent Hana Gibson, while Edwin Hodge could have played Special Agent Ray Canon again. The series also utilized a massive roster of guest stars, but it’s impossible to know who that could have been in season 7.

Brand-New Cases For The Fugitive Task Force

At this juncture, it’s impossible to guess exactly what would have happened inFBI: Most Wantedseason 7 because the cancelation makes everything moot. Typically, the procedural stuck to the case-per-week format, though there were several instances where the Fugitive Task Force tackled an ongoing story. With season 6 the last outing, it stands to reason that many of the threads may never be resolved, and the new threads dreamed up for season 7 will probably never see the light of day.
