Baldur’s Gate 3is an expansive game with a surprising number of choices that can define not only the player’s personal character, but also the companions within the player’s team. Eachcompanion has a personal quest, and through the player’s influence – either through playing that character directly or in conversations with them – they can be guided down an evil path.
While most of the companions have the potential for evil, there are differing levels of villainy for each one of them, withsome even feeling like they are predisposed to taking the evil route in their personal quests. That being said, some companions inBaldur’s Gate 3can only really experience their potential evil through small moments or in theirpersonal evil endings, which show their true potential.

9Jaheira & Minsc Don’t Have An Evil Route
The Protectors Of Baldur’s Gate
Compared to most of the potential companions on this list, Jaheira and Minsc are not only two of the four unplayable companions, butthey also really don’t have a single evil bone in their bodiesat all. Their personal quests revolve completely about being heroic, and while Jaheira can be quite aggressive at first, it’s mostly done so to protect her people at Last Light Inn, which is quite understandable.
How to Recruit Minsc In Baldur’s Gate 3
Minsc, and his mini giant space hamster, Boo, can be added to the party in BAaldur’s Gate 3, but it will require some work, including Jaheira’s help.
The best part of why it can easily be said that Jaheira and Minsc have the lowest potential is due to howthey actively oppose a Dark Urge who falls into his evil habits. They’ll even completely leave the party and fight the Dark Urge if they choose to become the Chosen of Bhaal once again, showing Jaheira and Minsc are truly dedicated to everything good.

8Halsin Can Only Be An Accomplice To Other’s Evil
The Protector Of The Emerald Grove
Halsin, while being a generally good-natured character, does havequite a few flaws that make him not quite evil, but not purely good either. It mostly stems from his ignorance and lack of action, such as being fine with the player murdering his fellow druids if they slightly convince him, or staying with a Durge who’s become one of Bhaal’s Chosen.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Completely Wasted One Companion’s Potential
Baldur’s Gate 3 is known for having many memorable and well written companions, but that does not mean that all of them can be winners.
This is frankly a general problem with Halsin’s character, asit feels like more of a plot device than a true companion at times. This unfortunately leaves him in a state of not being a good-hearted character, but also not having really any potential for evil. Him being one of the companions the player can’t play also doesn’t help this fact, as players don’t get to learn much about him, especially due to recruiting him well through Act Two.

7Lae’zel Seeks Power For An Arguably Virtuous Cause
The Destined Warrior Of Vlaakith
Despite Lae’zel being rather brash and cold-hearted towards others, she actually has great potential for good and shows that in her personal questas she separates herself from Vlaakith’s rule. Her story mostly revolves around growth, and while she is typically more amenable to the player’s evil actions, she isn’t going to push them to do them (most of the time).
Lae’zel also notably has a pretty interesting evil ending, whichcan be seen as more of a good ending for her, as she simply strives to take down Vlaakith. This is a pretty positive action, even if it’s done selfishly, as it frees her people from Vlaakith’s reign. She also doesn’t go out of her way to hurt people in this ending, which for an evil ending shows a lot of restraint and good actions, making her one of the least potentially evil.

6Gale Can Ascend To A Vengeful Godhood
The Wizard Of Waterdeep
Gale is the definition of a neutral character, andhis personal story and endings convey that very well. He can easily be quite a good character, but the player can also influence him into darker actions, as well as sometimes remaining in the background. He doesn’t typically mind the evil actions of the player, and he can often justify them as necessary acts for the journey, which carry well into his neutral personality.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Should Gale Reforge The Crown Of Karsus Or Give It To Mystra?
Gale considers reforging the Crown of Karsus in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, but should he give it to Mystra instead? The choice has consequences.
Gale, as a character, has an intense focus on godhood, both in his personal story and when you play as him inBaldur’s Gate 3.As a companion, he can turn into a god, still keeping him fairly neutral. However, as a playable character,he can completely turn against Mystra and force the people against her, which is not completely evil, but is a rather morally corrupt act.

5Wyll May Become A Despotic Ruler Of Baldur’s Gate
The Blade Of Avernus
Wyll, as a character, is quickly shown early on to be of pure heart and a just character that can do no wrong, orat least that is what he tries to make the player believe at first. Wyll has a ton of flaws that get revealed as the player adventures with him, including his insecurities and his mixed sense of leadership. He’s extremely conflicted during the entire story ofBaldur’s Gate 3, and this can lead the player to suggest him doing incredibly selfish acts.
Wyll’s flaws come into fruition both in his personal quest and his evil ending, as it enhances the worst parts of his personality. His personal quest not only allows him to abandon his father, but also remain with Mizora despite the acts she’ll continue having him commit. It becomes even worse when players opt for his evil ending, which shows himforcefully leading the people, also turning the majority of them into mind flayers, making them mindless drones.
4Shadowheart Very Easily Walks A Dark Path
The Chosen Of Shar
Shadowheart is a fairly complicated character, which meansthe player has a fair amount of influence on whether she can become good or evil. However, Shadowheart, on her basic path, will always follow Shar, and it usually takes a good amount of player input to turn her down a good path.
Shadowheart has two major paths of evil, which involve her personal quest and her evil ending. Her personal quest allows her tokill the Nightsongand become the leader of Shar’s church, which is definitely leaning toward evil, even in the world ofBaldur’s Gate 3. However, her evil ending throws a twist which causes her to rebel against Shar and Selûne, killing both of their followers by mind-controlling the people. Though Shadowheart could be considered quite neutral at times,it’s clear that her heart always leans towards the path of darkness.
3Karlach’s Ending Can Turn Incredibly Violent
The Fury Of Avernus
Karlach, like Wyll, is a character that comes off as a rather great person, especially in her personal quest as the player gets to see her struggles and fears. That being said, the potential for evil lies in everyone, including Karlach, andthat is shown off incredibly well in her evil ending where her wrath finally gets the best of her.
Karlach possibly hasone of the most brutal evil endings inBaldur’s Gate 3as she summons multiple cambions and mephits to murder the survivors of the war. While this may be shocking to some, it shows the depths of her rage and resentment, which we get glimpses of in her personal quest. While they might have been minor issues in her personal story, they come to a boiling point in her evil ending where she simply lets loose.
2Minthara Is Evil From The Outset
True Soul Of The Absolute
Minthara is a character that actually starts out pretty evil, and it takes quite a bit of convincing from the player just for her to become fairly neutral. That being said, her potential for evil is quite high, though she can’t reach its full potential due to being a non-playable character, similar to Halsin. She’s also recruited comparatively late, which makes it hard to build up her character compared to other companions, which is quite unfortunate.
Why Minthara Deserved More Content In Baldur’s Gate 3
Minthara is an afterthought to many players of Baldur’s Gate 3, but her story is very underrated and evidence suggests there was more planned for her.
Minthara comes in as the runner-up due to the fact she’s one of the few romances that can stick with the Dark Urge during a completely evil route, including the ending. As she’s already pretty evil, she simply cements her spot in that role with ease. Minthara is a classically evil character andif we got more of her, she could’ve easily been the most evil on this list by far.
1Astarion’s Ascension Is Truly Despicable
The Pale Elf
Astarion is a character that starts off with a neutral evil alignment – not quite fully evil, but he clearly prefers the evil choices compared to most companions. Players will first notice this as heapproves of most evil actions (that aren’t stupid) compared to other companions, but as you get to know him, you can quickly start to see his potentially darker intentions.
While Astarion can be good inBaldur’s Gate 3, it’s very easy to get him to be evil and when he becomes so, he is fully thrust into that life perfectly, especially after ascending. Astarion, as an ascended vampire, has very little morals, and sacrificed thousands for the sake of his own power. EvenAstarion’s evil endingwith him being more “benevolent” still shows him only focusing on his control of people and his personal needs over all else.
