Summary

Baldur’s Gate 3may not expand on its characters with DLC adventures or an expansion but Wizards of the Coast wants to ensure thatDungeons & Dragonsdoesn’t forget about Tav’s companions. The Forgotten Realms is a massive place, one filled with stories and myths that exist across different formats, not least of all the beloved tabletop role-playing game that everyone knows and loves. It’s not hard to imagine the likes of Shadowheart and Astarion showing up in officialD&Dcontentand from the sounds of it, WotC wants to make that happen.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Jess Lanzillo, Wizards of the Coast VP of Franchise and Product,Dungeons & Dragons, noted thatwhile the company is eager to utilizeBaldur’s Gate 3’s cast again, it wants to be careful about how they’re handled:

Astarion with imagery of Dark Urge from Baldur’s Gate 3.

“I think what we’ll look for are options where that makes sense. I don’t think that anyone, the fans or ourselves included, are super eager to just be like, we’re going to just kind of shove these characters down your throat all the time.We want to make sure we really land their character voice and that we aren’t seen as just kind of capitalizing on itor bastardizing these characters that people have really fallen in love with.”

With that in mind, Lanzillo goes on to state that when the time is right and Wizards of the Coast has found the best writer for an appropriate story, there’s a good chance some of Larian Studios' characters could return.Lanzillo goes on to joke that if she “can’t have more Astarion” in her life then she’s “going to go mad.”

Rare Baldur’s Gate 3 Interaction Reveals The Best Romance For The Dark Urge

Playing the Dark Urge in Baldur’s Gate 3 can lead to some romantic troubles, but a certain scene shows that one character rises above the rest.

How Could Baldur’s Gate 3’s Characters Return?

There’s Always A New Adventure

The most obvious way for theBaldur’s Gate 3party to return to the world ofDungeons & Dragonsis through another installment in the franchise. Larian Studios has already confirmed thatit’s not working on a direct sequelto its beloved RPG, butWizards of the Coast has noted that it’s open to developingBaldur’s Gate 4with a different studio. Given that several main characters of the first two games returned for the threequel, it’s not hard to imaginethe same happening for a fourth game.

It’s also entirely possible that Wizards of the Coast expands upon the character’s lore by having them operate as NPCs within a TTRPG module. Not only would this give fans a chance to put their own spin on their favorite heroes, but it could also help fuel their individual journeys, especially if the narrative is written around them. Having Astarion star a pivotal character in an officialD&Dadventure could make for plenty of memorable moments.

Whatever the case may be,Baldur’s Gate 3has served as a fantastic means of growing The Forgotten Realms. The events of the game are canon, meaningthey can be referenced in other adventures or products. Many fans will likely feel a sense of relief knowingAstarion, Shadowheart, and Karlachwill likely return one day.
