In Dexter’s case, especially as he started to act on his Dark Passenger in the prequel series, hiding the truth from Dexter did not seem to have a positive effect. Harry had the paternal instinct to bury it for Dexter’s protection but doing so did little for Dexter’s personal development.

Learning about Laura’s gruesome death as a teenager or college student would have consumed Dexter to the point where he would have had to seek revenge, which would have completely thrown his life off course.
