What are the best detective shows of all time?
As a favorite detective show, I’m tempted to qualify Twin Peaks since a significant portion of it does involve police work. But since that series lends itself to the supernatural side, I’ll throw True Detective season 1 in as a pure detective series. It’s not a profound or original take to say it’s probably one of the greatest seasons of TV ever and has some of the best subversions of classical detective TV narrative tropes. I’m also in the minority of thinking seasons 2 and 4 are over-hated, and season 3 is underappreciated.
However, Mooney’s reflective nature could sometimes be a drawback, with his slower pace occasionally hindering the intensity of his investigations. His introspective style, combined with the emotional weight of his wife’s death and awkward fling with Anna,added a sense of realistic melancholy and awkwardness to his character, which made him quite relatable. This was particularly apparent in episodes like Mooney’s final episode, where his personal struggles strongly influenced his approach to solving the mystery.

Neville’s journey of adaptation may continue someday like Humphrey’s, but if not, he, like all the other detectives, had a fantastic ending to his story.
