Summary
WhileDCandMarveleach have their own fans, there’s little those fans love more than when there’s a crossover between the two companies. These crossovers have happened a few times over the years, but unfortunately, fans were robbed of one of the potential biggest crossovers yet, which comics writer Scott Snyder recently revealed on his X account.
Dark Nights: Metal— by Snyder and Greg Capullo — was a major event in the DC Universe: a brutal battle between the Multiverse and the Dark Multiverse. Every single DC character came together to prevent Barbatos and the Batman Who Laughs from dragging all creation down into darkness. While this storyline ended with the heroes triumphant,it almost ended with a major crossover with Marvel Comics, as revealed by Snyder in anX post.

Snyder revealed that when the Source Wall was destroyed, his original pitch was for the Silver Surfer to be on the other side and for it to be the Marvel Universe that was beyond the Source Wall. This twist would’ve been an amazing moment in comics history, but unfortunately,Snyder’s pitch was ultimately rejected.

Dark Nights: Metal#6 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia, and Steve Wands
The Source Wall, for a long time, wasthe ultimate barrier of the DC Universe. It was the edge of everything, and no one was really sure what was on the other side. There have been some rumors that it was widely accepted at DC that it was the Marvel Universe on the other end. Snyder wanted to explore that idea, but the pitch was rejected, and the big reveal was that the other side ofthe Source Wall was simply the unknown: more space, more planets, but nothing as exciting as an entirely new universe, unfortunately.
For another major Big Two crossover, fans should keep their eyes out for theDC Versus Marvel: The Amalgam Ageomnibus, which is available everywhere comics and books are sold October 8th, 2024.

For a while in the wider comics industry, the DC and Marvel Universe did exist in the same worldfor the purpose of easy crossovers. This “fact” can be seen in stories likeBatman/Punisher, Batman/Daredevil,andSuperman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man.In all of these stories, there isn’t some convoluted portal opening or worlds colliding. In the instance ofSuperman and Spider-Man, the two characters simply arrive at the same journalists' conference by plane. There was nothing mystical or dimension-hopping about the plot. But theDark Nights: Metalpitch was one crossover that DC — and likely Marvel — simply wasn’t up for.
The DCU Has Met the Marvel Universe Several Times
Just Not DuringDark Nights: Metal
DC has hinted at a crossover with Marvel again, such as a crisis that involves a “jade giant” in the future. While it’s certainly possible that DC and Marvel will launch a crossover again, it simply wasn’t meant to be for the ending ofDark Nights: Metal. Hopefully, the two companies will be able to work out a story that they’re both happy with. But for right now, it seems thatDCandMarvelare both content to remain separate and continue doing their own thing.
