With the confirmation that Patch 7 may not mark the end of updates forBaldur’s Gate 3, there still lies the potential for more character customization options to be added in the future, if not through the Mod Manager. A great amount of content never made it into the final release, and though it may be wishful thinking to think players will get much more of it at this point in time, there’s no telling exactly what the future may bring. Something as simple as extra subclasses would be a simple and wildly appreciated future update.
TheBaldur’s Gateseries has always been an adaptation ofDungeons & Dragons, and doesn’t limit itself to subclasses exclusively found in thePlayer’sHandbook, with examples such as the Storm sorcerer being fromXanathar’s Guide to Everything. With such a wide array of choices, it’s inevitable that some options were not included in the release of the game. However, some subclasses remaining unused are more surprising than others.

10Oath Of Redemption Paladin
Xanathar’s Guide To Everything
A paladin with an Oath of Redemption would be an interesting substitute for bard or cleric as a support class, with spells focused on protection and non-violence. Gaining spells such assanctuaryandhold personwould serve players as a way to control the battlefield on and away from the front lines. It also has unlimited potential for immersion and character interactions, withone of the main features of the subclass being related to the belief that anyone can be redeemed. More evil-aligned characters such as Astarion and Minthara could have some complicated dynamics with the player.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Paladin Build (Skills, Subclass & Stats)
Paladins are one of the strongest Baldur’s Gate 3 melee fighters. They deal extra radiant damage and have high defense, but must rest often.
Another great opportunity for roleplaying value with this subclass would come with using it in a Dark Urge playthrough. It seems like the perfect option for those who want to resist the urge and redeem themselves, like the name implies. However, it would also add another layer of tragedy if they end up embracing their urge and likely breaking their oath. There are already several ways tobreak an oath as a paladin and become an oathbreaker, but this would definitely make for a compelling built-in story.

9Grave Domain Cleric
In the lore ofDungeons & Dragons,Grave Domain clerics typically oppose necromancy and meddling with fate.Playing a cleric of this subclass would place many interactions in Act 2 in a whole new light, with many characters that are met in the Shadow-Cursed Lands being members of the undead. It would also give Tav a more personal motivation to hunt down Balthazar and Ketheric Thorm.
When used correctly, the Grave Domain cleric can be a powerful healer as well as do some decent damage. With this subclass, players gainspare the dyingas a cantrip, and an ability to curse enemies at level two, causing them to be vulnerable to attacks until the end of the turn. This would be a great choice for people wanting to play clerics that aren’t entirely support-based, but want some more flavor than a regular Light cleric.

8Swashbuckler Rogue
The Swashbuckler rogue is a subclass beloved byDnDplayers and offers some of the more unique backstory ideas for a player character. Players would surely love having the option to play as a pirate. This addition would fit right in with the existing story, with characters like Captain Grislybeing perfect for this class.
What Is The Strongest Baldur’s Gate 3 Rogue Subclass?
Each rogue subclass allows players to specialize in a different set of skills. But are any of them inherently stronger than the others?
This subclass makes the Sneak Attack feature slightly more broad, allowing players to use it if they are alone with a creature in an area of five feet.It also leans into the more charismatic side of Rogues, granting them an ability to charm enemies after succeeding a persuasion check. This feature could allow players to use slightly different tactics for earning surprise rounds in combat.

7Soulknife Rogue
Tasha’s Cauldron Of Everything
Another extremely popular rogue subclass, the Soulknife, is a rogue focused on Psionic damage. It’s slightly disappointing that it’s not in the game already, as thematically,it would be a great class to give to a Githyanki,an already underrated race option. It’s also a good alternative to the Arcane Trickster in terms of a rogue that’s not entirely based in martial combat.
Choosing this class introduces Psionic Energy Dice, which are used to fuel the rogue’s abilities. One of these abilities isPhysic Whispers, which establishes a telepathic bond between the player and a target. While this is unnecessary for most of the main characters, as the mindflayer tadpole harbored by most ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s companionsallows for telepathy anyway, it would be interesting to see how this ability could be used to influence the non-infected characters, and even enemies.

6Hexblade Warlock
The Hexblade is a patron associated with the Shadowfell, which is an area briefly entered within Act 2 of the game. This warlock subclass could potentially offer some extra content in this area - perhaps a small buff or more dialogue. It’s a good choice for players who wantboth powerful melee and ranged attacks. This is another extremely popular class amongDungeons & Dragonsplayers.
Should You Enter The Shadowfell Before Moonrise Towers In Baldur’s Gate 3?
The best order to proceed through Act 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t always clear, but one approach makes it possible to avoid missing content.
A Hexblade warlock gains proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons, and once per long rest, they can touch a one-handed weapon to be able to make attack rolls with it using their charisma modifier instead of their strength. In situations where magic cannot be used, the Hexblade’s martial bonuses will mean that the warlock won’t have to be sidelined. Spells such aswrathful smite, branding smite, andbanishing smitealso encourage players to engage as more of a front-line attacker.
5College Of Dance Bard
2024 Player’s Handbook
A more recent addition toDungeons & Dragonsin the2024 Player’s Handbook, the College of Dance is a bard subclass where dance meets combat. This subclass being inBaldur’s Gate 3could lead to some hilarious situations - especially if players respecced their companions into it. This college would add some flavor to the bard class, as, unlike the other subclasses, it doesn’t necessarily require an instrument.
This subclass may be effective when multiclassing into monk, asit gives the player character a boost to their unarmored defense and unarmed strikes. College of Dance bards gain these bonuses since dancing often requires movement unrestricted by armor and shields, and it also grants advantage in situations where dancing is involved.
4College Of Glamour Bard
The College of Glamour is made up of bards who have learned their craft under the influence of the fey.The subclass allows players to charge their performance with fey magic, forcing those around them to make a wisdom saving throw and be charmed if they fail. Glamour bards also gain the Command ability at sixth level, making it perfect for those who want to play the typically charismatic, sweet-talking bard.
From the name alone, it’s fair to assume that players would love customizing a glamorous character for this subclass. It would also bea perfect choice for players wanting to play more evil or chaotic characters- the manipulative magic that comes with this class could allow them to rival the harpies near the Emerald Grove. Creating a backstory to explain how a character came into contact with the fey in the first place could also entertain players who like getting invested in their characters.
3Circle Of The Shepherd Druid
The Circle of the Shepherd is surprisingly powerful, given its non-threatening name. Taking this subclass allows the druid to call upon the spirits of nature to help them in battle, starting at level two. There are three totems players can choose from: the Bear Spirit, Hawk Spirit, and Unicorn Spirit.
Like most druids, The Circle of the Shepherd is focused on the protection of animals and the natural world. They protect them from dangerous or unnatural forces, such as monsters or predators that hunt more than they need to. They’re really what would come to mind when envisioning a standard druid - a friend of nature who can call on it to protect and aid them.
2Fey Wanderer Ranger
The ranger is an extremely under-utilized class and, in the game’s one-year anniversary statistics shared by theBaldur’s Gate 3X (formerly Twitter) account, was shown to be the second least-chosen class next to cleric. This is likely due to the base class being uninteresting to players, which could possibly be improved on with some flavorful subclass additions. One subclass not present inBaldur’s Gate 3is the Fey Wanderer -a character with a foot in both the fey and mortal realmmay just be what the ranger class needs to appeal to more players.
This class strikes a good balance between combat and interactions outside of it, giving Tav a supernatural charm at third level and proficiency in one charisma skill of the player’s choice. At seventh level, the Fey Wanderer subclass grants advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened, whichwould grant the player the upper hand in combat against Ketheric in Act 2, or Haarlep in Act 3. At eleventh level, the player gains the ability Summon Fey,which puts the late game ranger at similar levels to other classes such as warlock and druid, who can also call forth summons.
1Shadow Magic Sorcerer
The Shadow Magic sorcerer is another subclass that gains their power from the Shadowfell, either being able to trace their lineage back to an entity originating from there, or somehow otherwise being exposed to its energy. It may come with some dark markings or passive shadowy visual effects, similarly to the Draconic Bloodline cosmetics. It would be very fitting for a multiclass build with a rogue, like Astarion. The theme of shadows also works well with him in the context of his vampirism.
This subclass has the potential to shine in Act 2 of the game when entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands - while the player may not know where their magic comes from, they would surely feel connected to the area in some way. It may even provide a malicious motivation for players during evil playthroughs to ignore Halsin’s quest and not lift the shadow curse - perhaps they enjoy the chaos. This would definitely be a well-liked option for players wishing to delve into their dark sides inBaldur’s Gate 3.
