Though the franchise’s lead remains eager about the project,Jason Bourne 6has gotten an uncertain update from director Edward Berger. Development on the next installment of the Matt Damon-led action spy franchise gained proper steam in late 2023 when Berger, who was fresh off his Oscar win forAll Quiet on the Western Front, was said to have signed on to direct the movie with Damon in talks to return. While theOscar-winning star has affirmed his enthusiasm forBourne 6, no major updates have been reported in the year since.

Now, during a recent interview withCinema Daily USto discuss the religious mystery-thrillerConclave, Berger was asked for an update on how development is going forJason Bourne 6. The filmmaker not only had no major news to share about the Damon-led sequel, but even indicated he may not be the one to direct it, feeling uncertain what his future holds in the director’s chair. Check out what Berger said below:

It’s really not clear whether…I’m doing that film or not. I’m not doing it right now. And I really don’t know what I will do in the future.

What This Means For Jason Bourne 6

It’s Not The Only Sequel Berger Has Debunked Being Attached To

Interestingly, this marks the first time Berger has really spoken abouthis involvement inJason Bourne 6, withDamon having confirmed in February that the Oscar winner was not only attached, but that the sequel was being based on Berger’s idea, which Damon called “great”. In looking at his prior filmography, Berger has written all but one of his released films, thus making it likely that he’s meant to pen the script for the sequel, unless the studio brings in another scribe to write it while Berger focuses on his other projects, includingConclaveand the Netflix adaptation ofThe Ballad of a Small Prayer.

10 Characters Bourne 6 Can Bring Back Alongside Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne

Bourne 6 is officially in development at Universal, and aside from Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne, the upcoming film should feature old characters.

That being said, there is also the possibility Berger may be veering away from directingBourne 6. It wouldn’t be the first major franchise he was once reported to be attached to that he ultimately didn’t join, having once beensaid to be directingOcean’s 14, only to later confirm they were just rumors. Though Damon’s prior comments make Berger’s attachment toBournefar more concrete, the long gap between the initial announcement and his latest update may point towards him or Universal wanting to part ways.

Our Take On Berger’s Jason Bourne 6 Update

It’s Too Soon To Say Anything

While a lengthy wait is generally a concerning sign for any sequel, particularly one that already has an eight-year gap from its predecessor, I think it’s ultimately too soon to determine what Berger’s update means forJason Bourne 6. Considering he’s not only currently doing press forthe newly releasedConclave, but also reportedly in post-production onThe Ballad of a Small Prayer, it seems possible he may have just been too busy in the year since the sequel was announced to have properly sat down and mapped out his plan for it. And if Damon remains keen on keeping Berger at the helm, the wait may prove even longer.

Jason Bourne

The Bourne Franchise is an action-thriller series conceived initially by Robert Ludlum in the Bourne novel series. The film adaptations began with The Bourne Identity in 2002 with Matt Damon starring as Jason Bourne, a man who, after regaining his memories, learns that he was a top CIA assassin, with his former employer trying to kill him to tie up loose ends. The mantle eventually was briefly handed over to a new protagonist, Aaron Cross, portrayed by Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy. A television show titled Treadstone was created to tell the story of the titular agency behind the program but was canceled after one season.
