Summary
Black Myth: Wukong’s bosses have plenty of creative abilities, but most of them generally obey the standard rules of engagement. Large, sweeping attacks provide ample opportunity for the Destined One to dodge, even if timing mistakes can quickly spell the heroic monkey’s doom. Most of the tricks are left to the Destined One’s care, and his various transformations, spells, and even secret items can shut down otherwise mighty foes to open up opportunities to deal critical damage.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Black Myth: Wukong’s final boss.]Occasionally, however, a boss does break the rules. The most annoying examples of this phenomenon are foes who resist or even punish thepowerfulBlack Myth: WukongspellImmobilize, but it’s still easy enough to approach these bosses with an altered strategy and get the job done. When the Destined One finally arrives at the end of his journey, however, everything changes. The final boss ofBlack Myth: Wukongis merciless in a way that the Yaoguai Kings found throughout the game simply can’t manage, and one of his counters to the Destined One’s abilities proves to be truly memorable.

Wukong Steals The Destined One’s Healing Gourd
Nothing Is Safe In Black Myth: Wukong’s Climactic Fight
At theclimax ofBlack Myth: Wukong, the Destined One goes head-to-head with the broken shell of Sun Wukong himself, the Monkey King of legend whose relics the Destined One has collected across the course of the game. Unsurprisingly, Wukong’s abilities mirror the Destined One’s in some ways, although he can employ some particularly powerful variations that go beyond what the Destined One has access to. The most devastating is how Wukong uses Immobilize, deploying it when the Destined One takes a sip from his healing gourd.
The moment plays out as a choreographed cutscene, with Wukong slowly walking over to the frozen Destined One, snatching the gourd, and shaking it to hear the liquid inside.Wukong takes a big gulp from the gourd before tossing it back to the Destined One, who catches it as the Immobilize ends. It’s not as mean of a mechanic as it could be, as the Destined One’s share of the healing still goes through before Wukong snatches the gourd away, but it nonetheless wastes a chug of the precious resource on Wukong and heals him up by the appropriate amount.

Since the Destined One’s healing goes through before the animation, dodging immediately after taking a sip seems to avoid punishment, but it may not be entirely consistent.
Black Myth: Wukong’s Final Boss Is The Perfect Payoff
Punishment Can Be Fun When It’s Done Well
Unsurprisingly, the moment has been playing well as a humorously unpleasant surprise, and a YouTube video from streamer compilation channelFXRaincollects some memorable reactions to Wukong’s disrespect. In a way,it’s the perfect take on a punishing boss move, tending to elicit a smiling incredulity that helps counteract any annoyance at its frustrating nature. In a game that doesn’t touch much on the cheeky personality of Wukong, with the Destined One providing a more stone-faced alternative, it’s a great payoff at the end forJourney to the Westfans.
Black Myth: Wukong Is Exactly Like Elden Ring In One Cool Way
Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t stick to the soulslike formula in a lot of key regards, but one key similarity goes way beyond gameplay mechanics.
Stealing the gourd isn’t Wukong’s only shutdown move, and the others give it a run for its money as memorable moments in their own right. One sees Wukong turn to stone, counter the Destined One’s attack, and bounce him between clones in the air before kicking the Destined One’s staff back at him. In another that combines two of his powers fromJourney to the West, he hops on his Somersault Cloud, throws the Destined One to the ground, and resizes his staff to slam a giant pillar down into his opponent.

At the end of the day, a lot ofwhat makesBlack Myth: Wukong’s fights greatis that the game emphasizes presentation just as much as difficulty, and the struggle to fight Wukong’s broken shell is the ultimate realization of this concept. It also shows just how far the Destined One has to go to truly embody everything that the Monkey King was, as Wukong’s brash use of his powerful abilities is a defining aspect of his character. DefeatingBlack Myth: Wukong’s final challenge might take more than one try, but the road to getting there definitely isn’t boring.
