Terrifier 3’s Art the Clown may not have returned to his roots inAll Hallows’ Eve: Inferno, but the killer clown owes a lot to the anthology franchise. The 2013 anthology horror filmAll Hallows’ Evemarked the arrival of a short film,Terrifier, by Damien Leone that would go on to become a cult classic. TheTerrifierfeature premiered at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in 2016, but wouldn’t hit theaters until two years later. The runaway success of the movie has spawned two sequels so far, with both heavily featuring the first film’s murderous antagonist, Art.

Should Art The Clown Return For The Next All Hallows’ Eve?
WhenAll Hallows’ Eve: InfernoproducerSteve Barton spoke withScreen Rantabout the latest anthology collection, he made it clear why Art didn’t appear, but also stated his willingness to bring the clown back for a future installment:
Steve Barton: Damien is so busy doing what he does, it would have been impossible, and I am so happy for them. I released the first film, I executive produced the second one, and I’m thrilled for the success they found with the third either with or without me, but he has so much going on. His future is so bright, I can’t wait to see what he does. That being said, hey, you want to make a little cameo here and there, I’d be open to it, I ain’t gonna argue. But I think what’s happening for the genre right now is we’re in the best spot we’ve been in in a long, long time, and I just hope you see it keep going, and I’ll further it in any way that I can.
The easiest case to make for Art the Clown to appear in the nextAll Hallows’ Eveis that it would be a fun return to where the character’s story began in earnest. Although Art had appeared in other shorts by Leone,Terrifierand its feature film adaptation were the projects that introduced the killer clown to his largest audience. A return to anthology format would no doubt feel rewarding for viewers who have stuck withAll Hallows’ Evesince the beginning.
Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed,Terrifier 4is seemingly on the way, with Leone even tellingVarietythat he doesn’t see the franchise going beyond one or two more films. If that’s true, Art the Clown’s fourth feature-length outing may be his last.All Hallows’ Eveanthologies, then, could be the perfect vehicle to bring the character back in a rewarding yet manageable way that doesn’t necessitate the time, money, and story requirements of a full-length feature.
The case against Art’s return in the nextAll Hallows’ Evecould be made based on how the latest anthology came together. In his interview, Barton stressed that he wanted to collect short films that had already gone through the festival circuit, therefore creating a home for projects that otherwise may be forgotten:
Steve Barton: Indie filmmakers, they always start with horror shorts. And the problem with horror shorts, when you’re making an independent film, and you have a short film, is they have a very finite life expectancy. You do your festival run, and maybe you’re featured on a website or two, and then your film goes and dies on Vimeo or YouTube … So, I started thinking, “What would happen if we took these shorts that have already been filmed, that aren’t doing anything, collected them and put them into an anthology, just being exactly what they are?
Even at the risk of taking up programming space from something that could become the nextTerrifierfranchise, Art the Clown’s inclusion could draw more eyes to the nextAll Hallows’ Eve. IfTerrifier 3’s box office recordsare any indication, the clown would certainly be a compelling attraction.
