Alastair Reynolds has a PhD in astronomy and has a setting in space science — but the Terminal World author does n’t care to use the term “ hard science fiction ” to describe his work . speak to Locus Magazine , he explains :
I ’m always trying to write from a rationalist perspective , but I tend to push aside from the recording label ‘ hard SF ’ as well , because I retrieve it ’s a circumscribe full term that position off as many the great unwashed as it attracts . I test to put myself in the same area as Kim Stanley Robinson or Michael Swanwick , even though they ’ve done things outside of science fable . I ’m not doggedly sticking to getting the purgative perfectly right – I do n’t deal about that . Style is very authoritative . I ’m not somebody who think that text is just there to assist the story . I ’m trying to make it as rich and resonant as I can .
The fact that I ’ve got a scientific background may be more of a scarlet herring in my approach . I do n’t finger limited by saying I ’m writing science fiction ; I finger liberated by it .
