Warning: This article contains spoilers for A Minecraft MovieA Minecraft Moviehas just been released in theaters, and, as is to be expected, the film contains many references and Easter Eggs relating to the original video game. WhileA MinecraftMovie’s critical reviewshaven’t been great, there are plenty of moments, characters, and scenes forMinecraftfans to pick apart and dissect as more tidbits become publicly available.

With its A-Listcast,A Minecraft Movieis very much trying to win over people who don’t have that deep of a relationship with the game, but thankfully, the film doesn’t skimp on references to the original property, giving those who have a history with the game a lot of fun Easter Eggs to find. The references obviously extend throughout the whole movie, from its beginning toA Minecraft Movie’s ending, but these are the biggest and more interesting callbacks to the original video game.

A Square Appears Everytime A New World Is Created

A Minecraft Movieopens with a monologue by Jack Black’s Steve, but the very first visual that the movie shows the audience is a progress bar, slowly building up to 100% while pixels are filled in the center square. This is something that anyone who has played the video game will be familiar with, as it also appears every time a new world is created inMinecraft.

Where To Watch A Minecraft Movie: Showtimes & Streaming Status

A Minecraft Movie is finally here, and here is where potential viewers can buy tickets and when you can expect the film to release on streaming.

This is a very fun reference that reinforces the idea that this is simply one story being generated in theMinecraftuniverse, hencethe nameA Minecraft Movieas opposed to something likeThe Minecraft Movie. The video game is all about each person having a unique experience that they can do whatever they want with, so this was a great choice for the opening shot.

9Spider Jockey

A Rare Spawn Of 1%

One fun aspect of the movie that was pointed out early in the marketing cycle was the fact that one of the characters, usually Jack Black’s Steve, would constantly be calling out the names ofMinecraftitems and concepts, from chicken jockeys to ender pearls to a crafting table. However, one group of mobs that didn’t get any specific recognition were the spider jockeys, the spider-riding skeletons that appeared during the humans' first night.

While they were dealt with pretty easily in the movie, they can be a very deadly mob when encountered in the game, as the skeleton’s ranged attacks combined with the spider’s quicker movement can be a dangerous combo for newer players. They are also quite rare, only having a 1% chance of spawning whenever a spider happens to appear in the world.

8Slow Minecarts

A Frustrating Part Of The Game

This one is something allMinecraftplayers will likely deal with at some point in their lives, being very slow minecarts that refuse to move as quickly as you want them to. When Steve, Garrett, and Henry were trying to escape the Great Hog in the redstone mine, their powered rails ran out, and Garrett was forced to push the cart on foot, desperately trying to outrun a horde of creepers.

Malgosha

Rachel House

This is very accurate to the game, as, if you run out of powered rails on a track, you’re going to have a long wait to go any kind of distance. However, this is an even deeper cut reference, as, in previous editions of the game, you couldn’t move minecarts at all without a powered rail, and you would need to push it along if you wanted it to go anywhere.

7Pigstep

One Of The Games Most Beloved Songs

WhileA Minecraft Movie’s soundtrack has plenty of licensed songs throughout the film, it also includes a number of classic pieces ofMinecraftmusic, the most prominent of which is C418’s classic theme song, simply called"Minecraft.” However, another video game song is prominently featured during the Nether talent show scene, which is called “Pigstep”, composed by Lena Raine, released forMinecraft’s “Nether Update.”

That update was the one that introduced Piglins, and since then, “Pigstep” has become one of the most beloved songs in theMinecraftsoundtrack. It isn’t as well known as C418’s classic pieces, which are completely synonymous with the video game at this point, so it will likely be a slightly lesser-known detail that was included in the movie.

6Breaking A Fall With A Bucket

A Classic Minecraft Trick

This reference occurs after Steve, Garrett, and Henry escaped from the piglin assault on the village, and crash-landed near the redstone mines on their way to the Woodland Mansion. As they began to crash onto the ground,Jack Black’s Stevedropped a bucket of water on the ground, breaking their fall without any of them receiving any major injuries. The scene is also referenced later, when Garrett explains how he survived the explosion on the bridge using the same trick.

This is a classicMinecrafttrick, one that has stood the test of time since the early days of the game. Any amount of water will break a fall in the video game, so if a player has quick enough reaction times, they can survive a fall at any distance. There are other ways to survive falls in similar ways these days inMinecraft, but the water bucket trick has clearly remained important for a lot of players.

5Nitwit Villager

A Specific Villager Subtype

While most of the villagers inA Minecraft Moviehad various jobs around the small town that Steve inhabits, there is one who happened to be wandering around the portal to Earth, and escaped to the real world, eventually falling in love with Jennifer Coolidge’s character. He was wearing green, and didn’t seem to have any kind of job, which is a clear reference to the Nitwit villager subtype, who wears green and cannot gain a profession.

The Biggest Year Ever For Video Game Movies Officially Begins In 1 Week

An upcoming release is set to kick off the biggest year ever in the history of video game movies, a genre that spans back more than 30 years.

The villager/vice-principal Marlene subplot was one of the funniest aspects of the movie, and knowing the villager’s nature as a Nitwit, it makes all the more sense. WhileA Minecraft Movieis very goofy as a whole, that plot point in particular stands out as very silly, and knowing that the villager (who is hilariously given a voice inA Minecraft Movie’s post-credits scene), was a Nitwit makes it all the more enjoyable.

420-Minute Day Cycle

A Nod To The Game’s Inner Workings

This was referenced very early on in the movie, as the Overworld became night much quicker than the human newcomers expected, with Dawn even remarking that it felt like 20 minutes. Funnily enough, she was right on the mark, as 20 minutes is exactly how long a day inMinecraftlasts, with time moving 72 times faster than it does in the real world.

While time moving much quicker inA Minecraft Movieis an obvious part of the plot, the specific reference to the 20-minute day-night cycle is a fun nod to people who are more familiar with the inner workings of the game. It’s something that isn’t necessary to understand what is happening in the movie, but it makes those who do know it feel better for having understood the reference, which is what most great Easter eggs are.

3Firework Elytra Boost

Holds The Spirit Of The Game

This scene happened right before the moment that Steve broke his fall with the water bucket, while Henry was trying to escape the piglin that had grabbed onto his leg while flying. He pulls out a firework, and uses it to gain a huge burst of speed, knocking the piglin off his leg before spinning out of control, ultimately leading to hiselytra crash with Garrett and Steve.

A Minecraft Movieisn’t 100% accurate to the rules ofMinecraft, but it still manages to hold true to the spirit of the game, making these differences unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

This moment was foreshadowed earlier, when Steve said that fireworks were good for a boost of speed, so within the movie, it made sense, as there was a setup and payoff. Fireworks also function that way in the game, though they tend to be much less volatile when they give the burst of speed.A Minecraft Movieisn’t 100% accurate to the rules ofMinecraft, but it still manages to hold true to the spirit of the game, making these differences unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

2Don’t Look At An Enderman

They Won’t Ever Attack First If Left Alone

ForMinecraftplayers, this is one of the biggest pieces of advice to give to people who are less familiar with the game, as not following this warning can lead to a lot of pain for people who don’t know what they’re doing. Endermen are some of the toughest enemies inMinecraft, but they will ignore a player completely unless they attack first, or dare to look them in the eye.

Why A Minecraft Movie’s Reviews Are So Mixed

A Minecraft Movie hits theaters this week, and the Rotten Tomatoes score of 53% suggests an array of opinions from critics. Here’s what they say.

A Minecraft Moviegave all the different enemies their time to shine, and thankfully, the Enderman was given a scene where it was allowed to be the terrifying creature that it is in the game. While the video game version of these enemies don’t show players their worst fears coming true, making an enemy of one at the wrong time can certainly make those fears a reality in a few quick hits.

1Technoblade Never Dies

A Legendary YouTuber

There is a moment inA Minecraft Moviewhere a pig shows up with a crown on its head, to which Henry asks, “Is he some kind of king?” and Steve responds, “That’s a legend.” This is a reference to theMinecraftYouTuber Technoblade, whose logo was a pig with a crown on its head. Technoblade tragically passed away a few years ago at the age of 23, making this tribute one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the movie.

A Minecraft Moviewas released in theaters on June 24, 2025.

Technoblade was beloved by theMinecraftcommunity, and his passing was a moment that seemed to unite nearly everyone on the internet in mourning someone who brought so much joy to so many people around the world.Minecrafteven added a splash screen to the game’s front page that read, “Technoblade Never Dies!” Thankfully, with this Easter egg,A Minecraft Movieis continuing that trend by cementing his legacy in the film, ensuring his impact on the game will not be forgotten.
