Will and Angie’s relationship has been at the center ofWill Trentsince the very beginning, butnow that they are broken up in season 3, there are many reasons why they shouldn’t be together. The ABC police procedural TV show, created by Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karin Slaughter, revolves around the titular character, an excellent GBI agent and a complex man with a tragic past. Will was abandoned when he was a baby and consequently grew up in foster care. While he struggled a lot during his adolescent years, Will always had Angie by his side.

Will and Angie leaned on one another for support while they were in the foster care system. Their dynamic later turned romantic, and they have had an on-and-off relationship ever since. They are now in their thirties and both working in law enforcement (well,Angie loses her job but will get it back inWill Trentseason 3). So, Will and Angie have been through a lot together and understand one another on a level that probably no one else could. However, the two characters should keep their relationship platonic, especially afterWill Trentseason 2’s ending.

Numerous new shows and season premieres are making their way to network television in 2025, including the highly anticipated Suits spinoff.

Will and Angie’s roughWill Trentrelationshipwas built on their shared trauma, to no fault of their own, of course. Without it, their bond would be quite different. Perhaps Will and Angie’s dynamic would be much lighter and healthier, but instead, it’s weighed down by their terrible history. When Will looks at Angie, he still sees the girl who was abused all those years ago. Meanwhile, when Angie looks at Will, she sees someone trying to save her. They can’t escape their past, which is a significant reason why Will and Angie shouldn’t reconcile their romance.

7Will & Angie Know One Another (Including Each Other’s Faults) Too Well

They Know How To Hurt Each Other

It’s typically a wonderful thing to have someone who knows you better than anyone else. However, that is not the case for Will and Angie. The twoWill Trentcharactersunderstand just about everything about the other person, including their good and bad traits. Will and Angie know how to make each other laugh, butthey also know how to make one another cry.

So, while knowing someone through and through might look like a positive quality in a relationship on the surface, for Will and Angie, it’s the opposite.

Will is very aware of the things he could say to hurt Angie, and vice versa. They can use their past against each other, which they have done in pastWill Trentepisodes. When Angie wants to push Will away, she knows exactly how to do it. And when Will is feeling attacked, he can easily push Angie over the edge with him. So, while knowing someone through and through might look like a positive quality in a relationship on the surface, for Will and Angie, it’s the opposite.

6Will & Angie’s Romance Has Always Been More Toxic Than Healthy

Their On-And-Off Relationship Is Turbulent

In the history ofWill and Angie’s on-and-off relationship inWill Trent, no one has ever called it healthy. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. When Will and Angie are together, they fight constantly. They had a pretty good run of no arguing towardthe end ofWill Trentseason 2, but certain circumstances quickly brought that streak to an end. There are simply no other words to describe Will and Angie’s relationship other than toxic. If a fictional couple is regarded as toxic, they shouldn’t be together in their TV show, andWill Trent’s Will and Angie are no different.

5Will & Angie Shouldn’t Feel Obligated To Be Together Because Of Their Past

Their History Weighs Them Down

Will and Angie have so much history together that it’s understandable if they felt as if they had to be together as a result. However, that’s not the case. The twoWill Trentseason 3 charactersshouldn’t feel an obligation to be stuck in a doomed relationshipsimply because they have a complex shared past. They shouldn’t have to choose to be unhappy due to feeling responsible for the other person.

Will Trent Season 3 Resolves Angie’s Cliffhanger Fate With A Cop Out

The Will Trent season 2 finale ended on a massive cliffhanger concerning Angie Polaski, but the first look at season 3 spoils its resolution.

Will and Angie will always be in each other’s lives, no matter how they define their dynamic. Even after Angie’s arrest, the two will undoubtedlyreunite inWill Trentseason 3. If Will and Angie can restore their bond and get to an amicable place with the other person, though, that certainly doesn’t indicate that they should jump back into a romantic relationship. If anything, that means they are better off as friends than lovers. Will and Angie have to prioritize themselvesand not feel it is their duty to uplift one another.

3Will & Angie’s Relationship Has Never Lasted Very Long After All These Years

They Have Broken Up Numerous Times

Will and Angie have been switching between being together and being friends since they were young, and they must change this tumultuous patterninWill Trentseason 3.If a relationship is as rocky and uncertain as Will and Angie’s, it’s time to call it quits. It has never worked out in the multiple times Will and Angie have been in an “on” period of their relationship, so, it likely won’t work the hundredth time they attempt to be together romantically.

This Underrated Netflix Thriller From 2022 Is Great To Watch While Waiting For Will Trent Season 3

Will Trent season 3 sadly will not premiere until early 2025, but while waiting for new episodes, fans can watch a similar TV series on Netflix.

Plus, it’s tiring for the audience to watch Will and Angie constantly alternate between being lovers and being friends. The on-and-off trope becomes predictable after a while, and it gets old really fast. If the writers were to truly surprise and engage viewers, they would bring Will and Angie’s romance to a permanent end and start building a stable, long-lasting friendship between the twoWill Trentcharacters.

They Have New Love Interests In Season 3

Over the course ofWill Trent’s two aired seasons, neither Will nor Angie have been able to explore a romantic connection outside each other. Thankfully, that will change in season 3.Will meets Gina Rodriguez’s Marion Alba, an assistant district attorney, during the premiere when they cross paths working on a case. After two episodes,it’s easy to see the chemistry between Will and Marion.Their bond will only grow as the episodes continue, especially because Rodriguez is a series regular and will be a constant presence on the ABC police procedural TV show.

Meanwhile,Angie will also get a new love interest inWill Trentseason 3.Scott Foley was cast in a recurring role as Seth McDale,a doctor at a local hospital who catches Angie’s eye. Whatever the case, Will and Angie must remain separated inWill Trentseason 3 if either of them wants a chance to move on.

1Will’s Arrest Of Angie Changes Their Relationship Drastically

Their Dynamic Can Never Be The Same Again

Even if Will or Angie wanted to try a relationship again, his arresting her during theWill Trentseason 2 finale will always be a dark cloud looming over them. Her arrest fundamentally changed their dynamic, and Will and Angie may never be able to go back to who they were before it happened. However,a friendship is much more attainable. It will be difficult for Will and Angie to be in the same room together when they first reunite in season 3, but they can put in the work to at least be on friendly terms.

While speaking withTVLine, showrunner Daniel T. Thomson addressed whether Will and Angie can be just friends. He said:

“Obviously, the story of whether ex-lovers can still be friends has been done before, but I feel like there’s something [new] that we’ve been trying to explore: They’re not just ex-lovers, they’re each other’s life-long soulmates … But I think what’s been really interesting, and what we’ve been able to explore this year is that, whenever they have space to think about [their relationship], it’s really fraught, and then they back away from each other. At certain points in the season, maybe one person wants that friendship more than the other.”

Based on theWill Trentseason 3showrunner’s comments,Will and Angie will struggle to simply be friends in season 3.So, the odds of them getting back together are slim to none, which is for the best. Will arresting Angie completely altered their relationship, and there is no going back for them, whether they like it or not. Hopefully,Will Trentseason 3 proves how much better Will and Angie are as friends, bringing their romance to a permanent end.
