Going into the D23 weekend,Star Warsviewers were anticipating a couple of announcements, but instead were only treated to thefirst trailer forSkeleton Crew, as well as sneak peeks ofThe Mandalorian & GroguandAndorseason 2. While it’s a little disappointing that nothing new was announced, this hopefully means Lucasfilm is working to develop concepts for an upcoming animated series.
Star Wars’latest animated project,The Bad Batch, ended its three-season run in May, with many viewers thrilled thatClone Force 99was given a happy ending. Whilethe ending ofThe Bad Batchwas mostly happy, other loose ends hadn’t been tied up, particularly when it came to Captain Rex and his underground network of clones. Working with Rex was the former Clone Force 99 member Echo, who seemingly recruited the female clone Dr. Emerie Karr in the series finale. With this, many anticipated an announcement of an animated clone rebellion show at D23.

When Will Star Wars Make This Announcement?
Fans May Have to Wait A Year
With so many announcements across so many different Disney properties, it’s not surprising that Lucasfilm held off from announcing anything. Lucasfilm is likely waiting untilStar WarsCelebration 2025 to announce any new animated projects. Celebration will be held April 18-20, 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. The only animated project that was announced atStar WarsCelebration 2023 wasTales of the Jediseason 2, which was presumably changed toTales of the Empireand premiered in May.
With otherStar Warstitles slated for 2025 likeAndor,Lucasfilm may be looking to slow down how much content they are producing in favor of developing a fully realized path forward. The higher-ups at Lucasfilm should figure out where these new stories fit into the greaterStar Warsstory rather than diving head first with no direction. While audiences may have to wait until April for an announcement of a clone rebellion show, or some other animated project, hopefullyStar Warsexecutives will come with a completed trailer or episode for viewers to enjoy then.
